The 2015 interactive video gamealso received a remake in the leadup to its film release, one thatimmediately launched to “Mixed” reviews on Steam for a number of issues, including poor optimization. In other words, it’s Until Dawn’s world, and we’re just living in it.
Ahead of its silver-screen premiere, reviews of the movie have begun circulating online, and, well, it’s not looking all that pretty.
It Seems Like You’re Better Off Playing The Until Dawn Videogame
Over on aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes,the Until Dawn movie has a middling 66 percent score on 32 reviews. It’s not bad, but it’s also likely not the kind of score that Sony is hoping for, either.
“Lacks any sense of internal logic and is even lighter on surprising scares, dispensing only clichés that are as moldy as the haunted house in which his characters are confined,“one review from The Daily Beast reads.
In another review,Polygon wrote, “Until Dawn’s movie adaptation doesn’t fail because it’s not faithful to the game. It fails because it’s boring, in a way the game never was.”
Still, it seems like there are some critics who were fans of the movie, withone reviewer noting it’s a good movie to turn your brain off toand just enjoy.Another review praised it as a “throwback” filmthat understands the audience it’s made for.
Middling Reviews Aren’t A Death Sentence
It’s important to note that critic reviews, especially negative ones, don’t necessarily spell doom for a movie, especially a video game movie. Most recently,A Minecraft Movie has a 48 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However,it managed to become a commercial smash-hit regardless.
Even a movie as beloved asThe Super Mario Bros. Movie has a 53 percent aggregated score, andwe all know how well it did in the end. Elsewhere,Sony’s Uncharted adaptation sits at a 41 percent score, but itstill crossed over $400 million at the box office. Only time will tell how Until Dawn does at the box office, but history has shown that all hope isn’t lost.
