Summary
Watching your companions and other NPCs evolve over the three acts ofBaldur’s Gate 3is pretty interesting. Whileyour companions are the primary target of character developmentthroughout the narrative, you’ll also get to see what certain NPCs are up to and what becomes of them at the end of the story.
Zevlor, Dammon, and certain other NPCs will travel alongside you over the three acts, if you happen to help, save, or not kill them along the way. One of these NPCs is Mattis. You first encounter this roguish Tiefling at the Emerald Grove, where he tries to swindle you. And, if you make all the right decisions, he will be present during the second and third act too.

We Respect Mattis' Hustle
Should you choose to spare Mattis for trying to rob you in the first act, he’ll be available as a vendor in The Last Light Inn and Rivington in the second and third acts, respectively. And, if you take a look at his goods each time, you’ll notice that he’ll go from selling scammy goods like a Ring of Resistance to Ants, to legendary items like a Supreme Elixir of Arcane Cultivation in act three.
This is a sign that no matter how dire things are, Mattis continues to hustle, improving his goods and making the best out of the situation. In fact, he even claims to have got some of these fancy goods by looting Moonrise Towers after you’ve defeated Ketheric Thorm.
One player took a poke at Mattis' wares in the first act in a post on Reddit, but the comments revealed that the young Tiefling not only manages to survive the events of the game, but also improves the wares he has on sale.
“I love Mattis he’s an aspiring grifter/hustler and those items have the most charming descriptions I bought the spoon of saltiness from him and kept it in my inventory for the whole playthrough, haha I even forgive him for trying to steal from me in act 1,” said one comment.
Another said, “They’re so shameless, I can’t help but support their criminal enterprise. It’s also why I love Mol, the aspiring child Kingpin.” It seems that most players admire his enterprise, especially since he finds ways to survive and thrive despite the world’s fate being on a knife’s edge.
