If you’re using a Greatsword, there are plenty of skills that you can learn, but since Skill Points are limited early on, you’ll have to think carefully about where you intend to invest and this guide will help you to do exactly that.
Best Greatsword Skills
The Greatsword is the slowest of the three weapon types but hits the hardest. The Greatsword alsogrants additional Poise, so you can execute those slow but deadly attacks without getting interrupted by the enemy.
There are a few skills in the Greatsword Skill Tree that allow you to cast exceptionally deadly attacks, and you can do that pretty quickly as well, provided that you have the available Spirit to use them.These skills also make up for the few weaknesses that come with wielding a Greatsword, making the choices you make all the more important.
Best Swift Attack Skills
The Swift Attack skill tree focuses on your regular light attacks. There are some exceptionally useful skills in this category that are a must-have if you intend to master the full potential of the Greatsword,especially the Mortal Blow skill.

Mortal Blow 3/3
Mortal Blow is your bread and butter for dealing with a horde of enemies and doing a ton of damage.It should be leveled up for at least one point as soon as possible. It allows you to perform a horizontal heavy attack right after doing a light attack where you coat your Greatsword in Phantom Blade’s energy. It doesn’t consume any Spirit Charges.
Mortal Blow: Nascence
The Mortal Blow: Nascence skill allows you to perform the same heavy attackafter performing a dodge attack or a sprint attack.
Mortal Blow: Bloodshed
The Mortal Blow: Bloodshed skill enables you to charge your heavy attacks for aneven stronger version of themthat covers more area and deals more damage.
Titanic Descent 3/3
Titanic Descent is a great approach tool that allows you to jump toward your target and attack them as you’re landing. This attackconsumes one Spirit Charge.
Titanic Descent: Explosion
Titanic Descent: Explosion allows you to charge the attack andcoat it in Phantom Blade’s essence, unleashing an area-wide blast upon landing. The skill, when fully charged, consumes an additional Spirit Charge.
Best Potent Blow Skills
The Potent Blow Skill Treefocuses primarily on Charged Attacks. There are a few skills that help you execute these charged attacks better, such as the Ghost Arm Block, which can be used to parry incoming attacks while charging a heavy attack.
Ghost Arm Block
This skill allows you to press the block button while charging heavy attacksto guard against incoming attacksthat may interrupt you.
Giant Hunt 3/3
The Giant Hunt skill lets you jump into the air and attack the target on the ground with your Greatsword coated in Phantom Blade’s energy.The larger the enemy, the more damage this attack will deal. It consumes one Spirit Charge on activation.
Giant Hunt: Leap
The Giant Hunt: Leap skill allows you to perform a Giant Leap, but after dashing at an enemy to deal increased damage. Using the Giant Hunt: Leapconsumes two Spirit Charges.
Phantom: Night’s Veil
Phantom: Night’s Veil allows you to jump into the air and attackalongside the Phantom Blade’s avatars. After using this attack, enemies around you will receive periodic damage while you’re charging any attacks for a short duration.
Best Unbreakable Skills
The Unbreakable Skill Treefocuses on increasing your poise and other defensive optionswhile you’re swinging the Greatsword around. This skill tree contains three abilities, and each of them gives you another defensive option in your arsenal.
Heat Of Battle
The skill simply gives you increased poise but is a must-have for Greatsword users as it allows you toexecute attacks uninterrupted.
Indomitable
The Indomitable skill increases the damage of your attacks if youget hit while executing them.
Warcry 3/3
The Warcry skill enables you toassume a defensive stance and stomp the groundshortly after, dealing damage to the surrounding area for one Spirit charge. After using this attack, you’ll receive increased poise and will receive decreased damage from attacks for a short duration.
Inner Fury 3/3
The Inner Fury is an excellent area-wide skill where you shove your enemy with your hand, and Phantom Blade’s energy damages all the enemies surrounding you. The attack consumes one Spirit Charge and increases thecharging speed of all your attacks for the next 15 seconds.
Inner Fury: Swift
Inner Fury: Swift furtherincreases the area of the Inner Fury attackand further increases the duration of the buff, which allows your charged attacks to charge faster.
Breakthrough 3/3
The Breakthrough is another approach tool that allows you todash toward an enemy and attack themat the cost of a Spirit Charge. However, you don’t necessarily need this attack because Titanic Descent and Helm Breaker are much better options.
Best Overrun Skills
The Overrun Skill tree prioritizes dash and dodge attacks,further increasing your mobility on the battleground. Some of these skills are exceptionally useful to level up early on, as dodge attacks are super strong in this game, and you can also pair them with the Mortal Blow skill for increased damage.
Combat Cadence
The Combat Cadence skill lets you performan additional attackafter dodging and attacking.
Helm Breaker
Helm Breaker allows you to dash toward an enemy and leap into the air to strike the target on your landing. This attackdoesn’t consume any Spirit Chargesand is a great way to close in on enemies.
Helm Breaker: Onslaught
The Helm Breaker: Onslaught Skill allows you to immediatelyperform a Potent Attackafter executing the Helm Breaker.
Furious Swipe
The Furious Swipe skill allows you tododge in any direction and perform spinning slashesfor one Spirit Charge. What makes this skill so good is that it’s a great get-of-me button as it lets you evade certain attacks as there’s a short window of invincibility after activation.
Furious Swipe: Pursuit
The Furious Swipe: Pursuit skill lets youperform dodge attacks afterusing the Furious Swipe attack.
Best Guard Skills
For a Greatsword user,you’ll have to maximize your defense. There won’t be many windows big enough to land fully charged Potent Blows, but you’re able to always chip away on the enemy’s health bar with perfect parries and strong defensive skills.
Avenger
The Avenger skill ensures that your target receives damage after youexecute a Brink Guard.
Armor Breaker
The Armor Breaker skill lets you executetwo quick attacksafter successfully guarding against an attack.
Heart Piercer 3/3
The Heart Piercer can be used right afterperforming the Armor Breakerto unleash a charged thrust directly at the enemy’s heart without consuming any Spirit Charges.
Counterstrike 3/3
The Counterstrike skill is youralternative to a parry. This attack has a fairly large window and can be used while you’re being hacked and slashed by the enemy, but consumes one Spirit Charge on use. The Counterstrike skill has few other situational upgrades in the Guard Skill tree, but even without them, it’s a great skill on its own.
