One Piecebalances a lot of what makes different anime series great. Great action scenes, a likable cast, and some well-thought-out plots are all hallmarks of the long-running anime. One of the best parts, albeit not one of the major ones, are the various running gags that appear throughout the show.

These gags are those little jokes that make you love the characters that much more, or even fill in some of the space after tense moments. Either way, the various jokes and bits are something that viewers come to love. After over 1,000 episodes there are more than a few of them, but which are the best ones?

8Zoro Getting Lost

He Must Be Around Here Somewhere

One of the most long-running jokes in the series, and one that is the most consistent, is that Zoro has no idea where he’s going. However, he thinks he knows where he is going, which is more of a problem.

Every time the Straw Hat Pirates enter a new area, and either Zoro takes the lead, or they have to split up, he seems to lose all sense of direction. Early in the series, it seemed like it was simple confusion, then more to do with his care-less attitude, but as One Piece went on, it almost seems supernatural in the way that he can so easily get turned around. Especially after being told multiple times which way to go.

7Usopp And His Boasts

Great Pirate Lord Usopp

Usopp’s power grows alongside the rest of the crew. His abilities at sniping and invention are unmatched, especially his leap in power after the two years of training. He was almost a completely different person. One thing that never changes though is his passion for tall-tales.

Leader of ten-thousand men, pirate hunter extraordinaire, able to knock an opponent unconscious with a single look, Usopp has had some wild boasts in his days. The bit gets even better as new characters believe him,or just Chopperand Luffy. No matter the occasion, Usopp will attempt to wow someone before fighting them, even as a high-powered pirate.

6Everyone’s Different Laughs

Shihihihihi

Some of the gags in One Piece stand out better in the animated series than they do in the manga. One specific one is the different laughs that everyone has. It was subtle at first, but in the mid-to-upper-hundred episodes viewers started to catch on.

There are some really wacky ones, like Jesus Burgess and Gecko Moria, but they do actually help the characters stand out from one another. Plus, they make for great villainous maniacal laughter. It’s a subtle detail in such an expansive universe, but it’s a great way to differentiate such a large cast.

5Luffy Asking Everyone To Join

Want To Be A Pirate?

Some of the jokes come and go, with resurgences here and there as the tone of the show changes. One that has been brought back a few times now is Luffy asking random people to join the Straw Hat crew. As if the ship wasn’t full enough already?

It has led to a great party of diverse adventurers, and not all the people would have been bad additions to the crew either. Iceburg the shipwright,or even Viviafter her arc. But, some of them are just odd, like the various fish-people of Fishman Island, or nearly every zombie from Thriller Bark. What a crew it could have been.

4Luffy And His Nicknames

And I’ll Call You…

Luffy is a kind soul, but he doesn’t always know when to take things seriously. While it may not always be his fault, he does seem to have a problem with names, shortening many to similar nicknames based off of what he thinks he heard. Or maybe that’s just his way of being friendly?

Some of them last quite a while in the series, like Traffy for Trafalgar Law, something that even other members of the crew have picked up on. While others, like calling Chopper emergency food, wear off rather quickly. He is even keen on calling various antagonists nicknames, something that draws their ire more often than not.

3Brook And His Body Jokes

Also, His Bawdy Jokes

A later addition to the crew, Brook has earned his spot in the Straw Hats after Thriller Bark. A swordsman of merit, an astounding musician, and someone with some unique devil fruit powers, he etches out his own spot in their adventures. As does his unique humor.

His lack of most of his body was some concern for the group at first, but Brook most of the time takes it all in stride. The jokes he cracks and turns of phrase he has about missing various body parts never seem to get old, and it seems to remind the rest of the crew of his odd abilities too.

2Luffy Is Always Hungry

Sanji’s Job Is Never Done

It takes a lot of strength and energy to fight the monstrous foes that the Straw hats go up against. While each of the crew has their own way of healing and unwinding after a battle, Luffy’s is by far the most remarkable.

Zoro drinks, Brook plays music, Franky experiments, but Luffy, Luffy eats. It’s never small portions either. Huge turkey legs, bowls of soup and pasta, even whole fruits are no match for Luffy. But, all of that makes sense when you consider the energy he expends, and having the best cook on the seas in his crew too.

1The Crew And Franky’s Inventions

Android, Inventor, Cool Guy

Franky was a welcome addition to the crew. Even though the Going Merry was a loss, a shipwright was a helpful choice to not only build a new ship fit for the best pirate crew around, but also keep up repairs for it while they’re mid-adventure.

All the rest of the crew are thankful for Franky’s abilities, but some are a little more wowed with them.Luffy, Chopper, and Usoppall react in various stages of awe whenever Franky unveils a new invention. His upgrades after the two-year time jump were a plethora of the trio’s jaws dropping as he showed off each of his new upgrades. Since then, Franky knows he will have quite the audience whenever he unveils something new.
