Severalmoviesbased on video games have been released over the years, but not all have thrilled viewers like the games did. Sometimes, a video game movie’s downfall can be traced to a weak plot, and in some instances, it could just be that the directors failed to stick to the source material.
But then, some video game adaptations have enjoyed major box office success along with positive critical reviews. These impressive movies serve as a reminder that films made from games can be enjoyable when everything comes together well.

10Super Mario Bros. Movie
A Nostalgia-Heavy Movie
One of the better video game adaptations, the Super Mario Bros. Movie appeals to not onlyNintendo-loving adultsbut also younger viewers. It’s the kind of film the whole family can enjoy. Aside from the movie’s excellent voice acting, which makes on-screen interactions feel realistic, the movie’s visuals are just as vibrant as the Mario universe.
You’ll be less impressed if you’re looking for character development or a solid plot, as the movie intends to serve up a large dose of nostalgia with memorable music and a ton of Easter eggs. While this formula may not work for all video game adaptations, it turned out to be a great hit here.

9Gran Turismo
A Deeply Emotional Journey With Stellar Acting
Most sports biopic movies are known for focusing on the underdog stories of certain legends, and Gran Turismo isn’t any different. A live adaptation of one of Sony’s most successful exclusives, the movie tells the story of Jann Mardenborough, a race car game fan who believes his time to drive an actual race car will come someday.
If you’ve played any of theGran Turismogames since the series was released in 1997, then it’d be hard not to root for Jann throughout the movie. One of the film’s standout qualities was the well-choreographed racing scenes, which, like the games, put viewers in the driver’s seat, making each triumph seem like a magical moment.

8A Minecraft Movie
A Big Dose Of Humor And Adventure
Released in April 2025, A Minecraft Movie is a film adaptation of Minecraft, one of the most-played video games in modern history. Despite the movie’s largely questionable voice acting and uneventful plot, it is a perfect fit for kids, especially those with prior experience playing the game.
If you play a lot ofMinecraft, then you’ll quickly notice that the movie doesn’t offer many world-building elements like the game. Although not much exploration or character development is featured in the movie, younger audiences will have genuine laughs at the cinema.

7Detective Pikachu
One Of The Few Movies Where CGI Shines
Ryan Reynolds steals the show in Detective Pikachu with his amazing voice acting, but that’s not the only great thing about the movie. A 2019 film, Detective Pikachu, is based on thePokemon gamesand stays true to the source material as seen in the character designs. The movie’s CGI isn’t exactly mind-blowing, but it is better than most.
As with the Detective Pikachu game that was released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2016, the movie’s plot is centered on a mystery. While you’ll see more of Pikachu, other Pokemon also make appearances. The impressive creature designs, along with a life-like Pokemon universe, make this film a must-watch for fans of the franchise and newcomers alike.

6The Angry Birds Movie 2
More Laughs And Characters Than The First Film
Following the massive success of the first film, many expected an underwhelming sequel, but that’s not what happened. Set a few years after the events of the first movie, familiar characters such as Red and Leonard reappear while you get introduced to new faces like Zeta, who controls Eagle Island.
If you loved the first Angry Birds movie, then you’ll find nothing to hate about the sequel. It features a fair share of comedy, fun characters, and a cartoony world that is reminiscent of the hit mobile game. Beyond its comical exterior, the film affirms the importance of not being selfish and of recognizing the efforts of one’s team members.

5Mortal Kombat (2021)
Lots Of Exciting Fight Scenes
The newest Mortal Kombat movie had an uphill task even before it was released. It had to be so good that viewers would easily forget the lackluster second entry, Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997). And it delivered.
Released in 2021, the movie deviates from the tournament-style narrative that is found in the first installment of this series. Instead, it focuses on single matches, which, thanks to the well-directed fight scenes, are an absolute beauty on the screen. While this movie doesn’t feature a tournament, it’s expected that the sequel, which Warner Bros. approved in 2022, will see Earthrealm and Outworld fighters square off in that manner.

4Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time
An Abundance Of Parkour Fun
Based on the video game released in 2003,Prince of Persia: The Sands of Timefollows the story of Dastan, a street-wise boy who was adopted by King Sharaman. The movie lives up to thegame’s parkourtradition as Dastan makes climbing over obstacles and running across walls look easy.
Aside from the extensive parkour showing, the movie’s fight scenes are action-packed and should keep you thrilled for as long as they last. What’s more, your kids should feel safe watching this film as only a little blood is shown. The dialogue scenes and plot aren’t special, so going into the movie with minimal expectations in that regard is advised.

3Sonic The Hedgehog 3
The Film’s Visual Effects And Characters Make It Stand Out
A 2024 release, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 builds on the successes of the last two movies and presents a new and intriguing villain. A few years after the events of the second Sonic film, Shadow, the main antagonist in Sonic 3, is freed from confinement, and he immediately seeks revenge.
Keanu Reeves did an excellent job in voicing Shadow, adding a new layer of seriousness that makes the film’s action scenes feel more impactful. A definite must-watch for parents and kids, particularly lovers of the Sonic games, Sonic 3 bets big on genuine humor and character development. The result? A box office success worth revisiting time after time.

2Warcraft
An Engaging Story Complemented By Amazing Character Design
Video game adaptations are quite difficult to pull off, as directors must ensure that the films not only resemble the source material but are enjoyable enough to entice new viewers. The Warcraft movie manages to strike a unique balance, whetting the appetite of longtime players and sparking enough interest in newcomers.
As expected from an action fantasy film, Warcraft makes the best use of CGI. The scenes are visually appealing, especially with the life-like character designs, which make the Orcs seem real. The movie’s plot stands out just as much as the dialogue scenes, making it a fine watch for the two-plus hours that it runs.

1Tomb Raider (2018)
A Healthy Mix Of Adventure And Action
If you had a great time watching the Indiana Jones and Uncharted movies, then Tomb Raider (2018) should trigger a similar emotion. Set after the disappearance of Lord Richard Croft, Lara Croft, Richard’s daughter and fellow archeologist, seeks to uncover the secrets of the island of Yamatai.
If you’ve played the Tomb Raider game that was released in 2013, then following the film’s story should pose no difficulty. It’s a close adaptation of the game’s storyline with a stellar cast and memorable dialogue to sweeten things up. Admittedly, there is humor lacking in the movie, but then again, the film’s dark tone works fine as it’s a mix of action and adventure.
