Summary
Chrono Trigger, one of the world’s most revered RPGs, has been thrust into the limelight again recently. Last week, it was reported that the game’s creator, Yuji Horii, accidentally let slip that a Chrono Trigger remake was in the works(lining up with what we at TheGamer had heard). This was swiftly passed off as a mistranslation, though. Fast-forward a few days, and a second interview surfaced, claiming Horii had really shared his intentions to “do something” with the beloved title.
Unfortunately, I come as the bearer of bad news. Japanese media is reporting that, once again, Horii’s comments were mistranslated and that such a thing was never said.

It Doesn’t Look Like A Chrono Trigger Remake Is Happening, Then?
Late yesterday,Gamereactorpublished an article in which Chrono Trigger creator Horri was cited as saying, “Yeah, that’s right. It’s been a long time. Yeah, I want to do something,” reviving hopes that a remake of the game was actually happening.
In trying to decipher his comments in the interview, though, Japanese outletGame Sparknoted, “In the video for the article, almost all of Horii’s key Japanese comments have been replaced with narration in other languages, making it impossible to confirm,” once again casting doubt whether Horii had revealed his true intentions.

Doing its due diligence, Game Spark contactedSquare Enix, the original developers of Chrono Trigger, to get to the bottom of what was happening. Square’s response was simple: “It is a mistranslation regarding the remake of Chrono Trigger. Horii never made any such statement,“with Game Spark adding a note to international media, saying, “the bottom line is that, as of now, a Chrono Trigger remake has not been announced, and at the very least, Horii is not even considering it.”

Of course, take all of this with a pinch of salt. A Chrono Trigger remake is likely to be a tentpole announcement for Square, and they’re not going to want the wind taken out of their sails by a couple of interviews; they’ll want to announce it themselves. Any denial is going to be natural. But as they say, there’s no smoke without fire. We’ll just have to wait and see how the situation evolves, but based on what we’ve heard, plus the fact that Square previously saidfans of the game can expect “Various Projects” for its 30th anniversary, something seems awry.
