Summary

Elden Ring Nightreignhas more than a few different references to theDark Soulsseries, and they’re not all asglaringly obvious as The Nameless King whooping our butts all over again. We already know the game has just thrown a bunch of Dark Souls enemies, characters, and bosses into the mix for a bit of a laugh, but Elden Ring Nightreign has brought back an enemy that has been absent in the studio’s latest games.

Elden Ringhas a lot ofFromSoftwaretropes, such as invisible walls, poison swamps, and our good friend Patches, but the one thing that Elden Ring didn’t have that most FromSoftware games do is Mimics. In Elden Ring, you could open up chests as much as you pleased, never worrying about whether a huge set of teeth and massive tongue would pull you in and munch you up for breakfast, but a lot of fans ended up missing such an iconic enemy.

Elden Ring Nightreign Brings Back Mimics, Kind Of

The same is true in Elden Ring Nightreign, but that doesn’t mean that Mimics aren’t included in the game. In what is arguably one of the best and most surprising Dark Souls references we’ve found in the game so far, Elden Ring Nightreign brings back the Symbol of Avarice from Dark Souls, which is a wearable Mimic head that provides certain benefits, at the cost of constantly draining health.

To wear the head of a Mimic, you’ll need to cross your fingers and hope that Libra (one of the game’s Nightlords) halves your health while you’re exploring Limveld. This can happen at almost any time, even on other Nightlord’s Expeditions, and the only way to remove the effect is to spend 10,000 Runes.

After that, you will get to pick a Boon of your choice, and if you decide to go with Runes to replace the ones you just lost, you’ll be given a Symbol of Avarice Talisman. When equipped, your health will drain slowly, you’ll get 20 percent more Runes from all sources, plus 60 item discovery, and - most importantly of all - you’ll be able to turn around with a phantom Mimic head on your bonce, similar to the helmet you could find in the Dark Souls series.
