Far Cry 4has received a surprise update over a decade after the game originally released in 2014.
Far Cry 4 had previously been capped at 30 frames-per-second on current generation consoles, but Ubisoft has now removed that cap, allowing PlayStation 5 players to enjoy Far Cry 4 at 60 frames-per-second. This feature was already available on Xbox Series X since 2021.

Given 30fps was the standard when Far Cry 4 originally released, the game was likely designed around this cap and had to be maintained to ensure everything worked as intended.
Ubisoft is making a habit of updating the frame-rate capabilities of its older titles. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Assassin’s Creed Origins have previously received 60fps updates.
The Far Cry series hasn’t had a new instalment in four years as Ubisoft shifted its focus to Assassin’s Creed. The latest release in the series, Far Cry 6, received middling reviews from critics, who highlighted that the series badly needs re-inventing after several successive releases that play very similarly.
It’s been a troubling couple of years for Ubisoft as the French developer and publisher grappled with a couple of high-profile commercial failures, such as Star Wars Outlaws. After a rapidly declining stock price and reports ofshareholder in-fighting, the success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows seems to have granted the beleaguered Ubisoft a reprieve.
A subsidiary of Ubisoft valued at $4 billionwas recently spun-offto handle the company’s marquee franchises of Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six. The Chinese gaming conglomerate Tencent owns a 25 per cent stake in the subsidiary.
Ubisoft still isn’t in a particularly strong position even with Tencent’s backing, but all it takes is a run of good games to change the perception of the company, both in investor circles and among gamers. Assassin’s Creed Shadows was the most commercially successful Assassin’s Creed game besides Valhalla, which is hard to compete with because it was released during the pandemic.
Far Cry 4 is also joining Game Pass on April 30.
