Ryan Coogler is on an almighty high right now. The director of Sinners has never had a movie even close to being anything other than Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, having also directedBlack Pantherand Creed amongst other hits. However,Sinners opened to a perfect score, and even now has settled at a hugely impressive 99 percent.
Coogler’s next project, however, will not be a movie, but will be in the world of television. He’s overseeing the reboot of The X-Files (second reboot, or third if you count 2008 movie The X-Files: I Want To Believe), and recently had some good news for fans while promoting Sinners.

X-Files Reboot Director Has “Spoken To The Great Gillian”
Speaking onLast Podcast on the Left(asspotted by Screen Rant), Coogler confirmed that next across is desk is reviving the iconic ’90s show. “I’m working on X-Files,” Coogler said. “That’s what’s immediately next. So, I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it, and some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f**king scary.”
Little is know about the reboot other than its vague existence. We don’t even know if it being “immediately next” for Coogler means that’s the next thing he’s actively making and shooting, or if writing and behind the scenes planning will follow Sinners promo in the short term before Coogler gets back in the director’s chair for something new (more Black Pather, or a new IP) while the logistics of The X-Files are worked out.
The 2016 reboot, which got two seasons and wrapped in 2018, seemed to set up a new direction, with Kyd Miller and Liz Einstein, played by Robbie Amell andLauren Ambrose, long being teased as a potential new duo. However, it’s tough to imagine anyone replacing Mulder and Scully, and with fans unimpressed by the complex pregnancy storyline that ultimately ended the series, people will be eager to see the original duo back. As far as Gillian Anderson’s Scully goes, Coogler can offer some encouragement.
“I’ve spoken to the great Gillian,” Coogler said. “She’s incredible. Fingers crossed there. I can’t wait to see her. She’s in Tron [Ares]. I just seen a trailer for that. When I spoke to her, she was finishing that up. But we’re gonna try to make something really great, bro, and really be something for the real X-Files fans, you know what I’m saying? And, maybe, find some new ones.”
For now, we’ll have to wait and see what becomes of The X-Files reboot. But I want to believe.
