9"My Cabbages!"
Cabbage Man
The “My Cabbages” man is a repeat background character. He’s a business merchant who sells cabbages in the Earth Kingdom. Somehow, he always manages to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. During fights, team Avatar (or the people they’re fighting) always destroy his cart.
Every time this happens, the man screams, “My Cabbages!” This merchant is one of the only background characters to appear in multiple seasons. He appears in two episodes in Season 1 as well as two episodes in Season 2.
8“It’s The Quenchiest.”
Sokka
Sokka is full of hilarious and adorable one-liners. This particular one comes from him being in the desert and splitting cacti in order to quench his first. As he drinks it, he tries to convince everyone else that it’s delicious.
While he does the worm (the dance) and liquid seeps from his mouth, he tells his friends that it’s quenching his thirst in the most dramatic fashion. “Nothing’s quenchier. It’s the quenchiest!” It’s a funny line, and so memorable.
7"Your Zuko Costume Is Pretty Good, But Your Scar Is On The Wrong Side."
Fire Nation Boy
When the gang ends up in the fire nation after Zuko has joined them, they end up stumbling upon a play that was written about them. It’s a bad portrayal, and throughout the show, they make fun of each other and their way they are each written.
When Zuko is sitting in the hallway after the show, a young boy approaches him. Not realizing that he’s actually Zuko, he smiles and says, “Your Zuko costume is pretty good… but the scar’s on the wrong side.” It’s the only time we meet this young boy, and it’s followed by Zuko yelling back in frustration.
6“My First Girlfriend Turned Into The Moon.”
Towards the end of the series, Sokka and Zuko start to connect as friends. It’s really great because it shows how much Zuko was just another kid and, with the right guidance, anyone can be good. This friendship is the start of it.
Sokka tells Zuko, “My first girlfriend turned into the moon.” After a moment of awkward silence, Zuko responds with, “That’s rough, buddy.” It’s one of the first times that these two characters really connect.
5“I Am Not Toph. I Am Melon Lord!”
Toph
When the gang is practicing beating the Fire Lord, Toph plays the role of the villain. They try out plans for Aang and the group to destroy her. Toph enjoys the role, throwing rocks everywhere and laughing. When Sokka tells Toph to watch out, she screams, “I am not Toph, I am Melon Lord!”
This became a popular meme. Artwork and posters were created surrounding it (over 700!) and people even refer to Toph as Melon Lord in online forums.
4“There Is No War In Ba Sing Se.”
Earth Kingdom
“There is no war in Ba Sing Se,” is a phrase that took over the internet, becoming a very popular meme and a widespread phrase. In the episode where this phrase originated, we see characters being hypnotized to make citizens forget that the war was happening so they could fake a Utopia.
In moments of AI and fake news, the meme surrounding this will show up in the comments. It’s used to call out hypocrisy, propaganda, and political manipulation. It might just be the most well-known line from the entire show.
3"Oh, No! What A Nightmare!"
There are a couple of moments in the show where Toph’s friends and comrades seem to forget that she’s blind, and this is one of those moments. In Book 2, she has to take all of them underground to lead them to safety.
After they all climb into the hole she created in the earth, she covers them up. Sokka immediately says, “It’s so dark down here! I can’t see a thing.” In the most sarcastic voice possible, Toph responds with, “Oh no! What a nightmare!”
2"It’s Sparky Sparky Boom Man."
Aang
Combustion Man is an assassin that was hired by Zuko to kill Aang and his friends. He makes large explosions at will from his third eye tattoo. Originally, Sokka gave him the nickname of Sparky Sparky Boom Man.
When the Combustion Man reappears in the fire nation, we zoom in on Aang, whose mouth drops. He hides behind a large statue, and when his face pops up he exclaims in complete sincerity, “It’s sparky sparky boom man!”
1"I’m Not But I Still Don’t Wanna!"
Fisherman
Sokka is on a boat with a fisherman when a terrible storm breaks out. The boat sways back and forth as water pours down on them. In a panic, both of them hold onto what they can in the hopes that they’ll survive this terrible storm.
Sokka cries out in agony, “I’m too young to die.” And our fisherman, who we have barely gotten to know, responds with, “I’m not, but I still don’t wanna!”
