Summary

The launch ofDeath Stranding 2: On The Beachis now right around the corner with the sequel set to release exclusively onPS5next month. However, even though the second game in the series hasn’t launched yet, its creator Hideo Kojima is already thinking about what might come next.

Speaking with VGC, Kojima revealed he has already come up with a concept for a Death Stranding 3. In fact, the head of Kojima Productions admitted Death Stranding could have “endless sequels”. That’s thanks to something called “plate gates”, a new element of Death Stranding’s post-apocalyptic world that will be introduced in the sequel.

It’s not clear what exactly plate gates are or how they work - I guess we’ll find that out for ourselves when we start playing on June 26 - but it sounds like they’ll connect the game’s United States to other countries in some way. The implication from Kojima is that future games, should the series continue beyond a single sequel, could tell stories that center around what’s happening in the game outside of the US.

Kojima Has Ideas For Death Stranding Sequels

But Those Ideas Will Need To Be Fully Realized By Someone Else

However, if there is going to be a Death Stranding 3, Kojima won’t be in charge of it. “I already have a concept for another sequel. I am not going to make it myself, but if I passed it on to someone else, they could probably make it, Kojima told VGC. Surprising that Kojima would be willing to hand over the reins to his post-Metal Gearbaby to someone else, but on the other hand, the director does already have a lot of other projects in the pipeline.

Kojima is currently working on games for bothXboxand PlayStation - a horror game called OD he’s making with Jordan Peele for the former, and Physint for the latter which we still know very little about. We also know On The Beach won’t be the last time Kojima works on a Death Stranding project whether there’s a third game or not ashe’s currently working with A24 on a movie adaptation of the first game.
