Only a few days into your new life inThe Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, you’ll be given the option to use the fire extinguishers by the front door of the school to quickly make a gap in the Undying Flames to sneak out and explore the ruins of the outside world.

Sirei tells you there isn’t much there, but with so many resources on the line (and dangers you’ll face as you venture out to explore for them), we’d beg to differ! Bring a strong team and brave the outside world to gather resources so you can level up.

How Does Exploration Work?

Gather Materials By Finding Items Left In The Rubble

While you’ll have the option to do so a little earlier after Sirei’s initial disappearance, the first time The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy makes you explore beyond the Undying Flames is onDay 006when you’re venturing out in search of Eito, who has left without assistance and is likely in peril. If you haven’t been out already, welcome to the world outside the Academy - there’s not much butresources and enemiesto be found in the wilds.

As soon as Takemaru appears in the Entrance Hall on Day 005’s morning Free Time segment, the option to explore beyond the Flames will be unlocked if you stop in and talk to him. You’ll receive a brief overview of expeditions, but going that day isn’t necessary unless you need more resources for leveling your beginning teammates up a bit before new people start joining the fight in time.

When you’d like toexplore during your Free Timesegmentsthroughout the game, you’ll need todo so in the morning, since launching an expedition beyond the Undying Flamestakes the entire dayto complete. When you get back to the Academy after you’ve ended the adventure, you’ll be sent to bed and made to continue into the next day, so choose when to go wisely.

Sending characters out into the ruins sees you playa board game minigameusing your classmates as the pieces. You’ll be giventwo step cards, each with a numberon them, at the beginning of your turn, and from there, you’llchoose which number of spaces you want to move.

Your piece alwaysstops at crossroads to confirm a directionto continue moving, but beware of sections of Undying Flame that cannot be crossed yet. You’ll need to turn around should you come across one of these, so be mindful of what’s ahead on the path!

Though you’re locked into using Takemaru, Kimeko, and Darumi in the earliest days of The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, you’ll notice thateach of your classmates excels at something, particularly in finding certain types of materials when they’re sent out into the field to explore. Eventually, as more teammates join the fight, it’ll be important todecide which resoures you need before you leaveso you can bring teammates that simplify your expedition in some way.

Take into accountwhich resources each teammate is best at finding, and pay attention to quality differences as well when the quality of resources comes into play.

You can often move in any direction at these crossroad intersections, so it may be wise toscan the overview of the boardto see what’s nearby before you make your decision.Backtracking is entirely possiblewithout meaning to do so, so if you’re not trying to backtrack, you’d be wise tohave a general idea which direction you need to move inwhen deciding where to go at a crossroads. You can waste plenty of time (and potentially valuable HP) trying to complete a circuitous loop to get back to where you needed to be if you’re not careful.

While you’ll see the treasure spots dotted around the game board out on expeditions, plenty of the rarest treasures on the board ofblocked by Undying Flames, which means you’ll need your fire extinguishers to deal with them.Every flame is assigned a level, and you’ll need to have reached this rank to use the extinguisher on this space.

Important Spaces On The Expedition Game Board

Symbols And Colors: What Do They Mean?

Along the way, you’ll see a number ofspaces with resource symbolson them, and landing on one of these will bring up asituation cardthat you’ll need to resolve before being able to move on. The symbols on the tiles match those on your resource list and includeplantsfrom the leafy tiles, textileson spaces with a folded cloth, mineralswhere you see rock icons, andmetalsfrom the screw and gear symbol.

Once you’ve landed on an action space, the symbol will be removed. You can land on this space again if you need, but nothing will happen - only one action card per tile.

When you land on one of these tiles, you’ll be given a scenario for your team and made to choose how they respond, andyour decisions matterto the results of the expedition, since there are plenty of choices that can and will get teammates injured. There are also choices you may not be able to choose yet, since these are tied to having certain grades in specific subjects. Work on improving your grades in your free time as well to unlock more expedition options in Last Defense Academy.

When it comes to these spaces, you’ll want to pay attention tothe color of the spaceyou’re about to land on, since the color of a tile warns you of thedifficulty levelof the situation you’ll need to contend with in these spaces.Teal are easy tilesand present little risk of personal harm, whileorange are medium-difficultyoptions that pose a bit of a threat, whilepurple is the most challenging optionand can very readily get your or the team injured or sap your resources if not handled with care. They may even lead to battles, so come prepared to fight!

The goal of any expedition is typically the same outside of special recon missions related to the main story: tocollect resources by solving these scenario cards, collecting as many items as is safe to do so while you and the team are out exploring. You can choose to end an expedition, but pay close attention to your health - not only will yourexpedition end if you run out of HP, but you’ll alsolose half the items you collectedwhen beingsent back to the Academy.

After an expedition, you and your teammates will go back to the school itself andconvert relics located into usable resources, and you’ll segue into the next time segment after confirming you’ve returned. They’ll be listed as their in-game appearance in your inventory to the left side of the screen throughout, then converted upon arrival back at the school.

Battle And ? Spaces

If it’s BP and a fight you’re looking for, you may be interested in theBattle Spaces, with a little monster symbol on a hexagonal board piece. Here, you’ll go up against a plethora of invaders, but there are plenty of battle points on the line for completing these optional fights! Like the resources, you’ll need tokeep the color of the tile in mindbefore deciding you want to go there, especially since HP loss is permanent after battles - nobody wants to need to go back prematurely because of a fight!

Additionally, you’ll seeround ? spacesdotted across the expedition board in The Hundred Line Last Defense Academy as well. These can incur any kinds of events, so it’s best to stay on your toes and only choose them if the team is in good health and your inventory isn’t too full yet.

Aim For The Checkpoints

Regardless of when you first venture out past the Undying Flames, you’ll come across severalneutral spaces as checkpointsat key intersections along the board. Once you’ve unlocked some in The Last Defense Academy, you’ll be able tobegin exploring from any checkpoint you’ve already accessedwhen you next head out, so it’s always a good idea to peek ahead and stop by as many as you’re able to.

If you’re feeling fatigued, you can end an expedition at any checkpoint to return to school at any time, as long as it’s not a core mission.

Not only does offering checkpoints give you a way to fast-travel around different sections of the board, but it’s important to keep in mind (especially later in the game) thatlocations further away from the school have more plentiful, higher-quality resourcesto be found, so it’s always wise to bring your strongest teammates and get as much as you can each time you head out. That said, thearea around the school offers every resourcein the game, even if they’re of lower quality. You’ll use these a lot in the early hours of the game, so stock up!
