Fire Emblemhas been around for quite a while, and to this day remains as one of best-in-class for turn-based tactics games. Beginning back in 1990, the series has shifted in popularity to the point it was almost axed entirely, and now sits comfortably at the most popular it has ever been.

And with those years of experience behind it, the series has had plenty of chances to reinvent itself, and twist its ideas in new and fascinating ways. But just how many Fire Emblem games have there actually been, and when did the series first appear in the Western world? Let’s find out.

How Many Mainline Fire Emblem Games Are There?

From its origins back in 1990 on the NES, the Fire Emblem has rarely ever taken extended breaks. In fact, the largest time between two mainline entries was thefive-year period between Radiant Dawn and Awakening, from 2007 to 2012. These aside, there has never been more than four years between mainline entries, both before and since.

And just how many games can you release in such a period? Let’s check that out below:

For the sake of clarity, the remakes of mainline titles have been excludedfrom this section.

Mystery of the Emblem has a remake as its first section, and an entirely new story as its second half.

In total, the Fire Emblem series is sitting at 14 mainline entries, remakes of other mainline games notwithstanding. In 33 years, that’s a respectable number, roughly working out at a new game every two years. That figures is slightly skewed by the Game Boy Advance entries however, which all came out within a year of one another.

How Many Fire Emblem Spin-Offs Are There?

With over 30 years of the series being in existence, it’s not a surprise that Fire Emblem has a few spin-offs. What’s actually much more interesting is the fact thatthe series has so few spin-offs. Most series that have been around this long, even Nintendo’s own ones, would have many more spin-offs at this point.

2017

2022

There are only a total of five Fire Emblem spin-offs, and even BS Fire Emblem was later incorporated into a mainline remake, Fire Emblem: New Mystery Of The Emblem. As such, that only leaves us with three dedicated remakes, which can be stripped down even further. So let’s do just that.

So while the majority can still be safely classed as spin-offs,Three Hopes straddles the linein being so closely tied to the game it is a spin-off of.

How Many Fire Emblem Remakes Are There?

Video game remakes are often seen as something of a modern phenomenon. We yearn for the nostalgic times of the past so much, we just keep bringing them back, but a little shinier this time. Exceptvideo games have been made and remade since their earliest days, and Fire Emblem is, well, emblematic of that.

The original Fire Emblem released in 1990, yetonly four years later it had a remake. And guess what? It got another remake too. Let’s check them all out below:

2008

2010

Across those four remakes, you might notice something interesting.Three of them are all remakes of the very first game. Mystery of the Emblem fully remade the original, and then added a whole new story section as well. Shadow Dragon was another remake, this time dedicated to just the original version of the game, with a more comprehensive makeover.

And then the very final remake is of Mystery of the Emblem, rather simply titledNew Mystery of the Emblem. This was also for the DS, and also incorporated the original Satellaview game as well as additional story segments.

And the very final remake of Echoes, which is aremake of the second game in the series, Gaiden. So perhaps from here onward, we can expect remakes only of older games, unless Shadow Dragon needs yet another release.

How Many Fire Emblem Games Have Been Released Internationally?

An interesting fact about Fire Emblem is that, though it is indeed a beloved game internationally now, it was not so for quite a while. While it wasn’t the first game that released in the West,Fire Emblem Awakening is what made the series a householdnamearound the world, whereas Japan had been it’s only prominent region prior to this.

However, the first Fire Emblem game to release in the West was Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. This was a prequel to The Binding Blade, which to this day has still not found its way to the west. In fact, none of the Fire Emblem games prior to The Blazing Blade have been released in the west.

Briefly, Nintendo did make a localised version ofShadow Dragon and the Blade of Light available digitally, though only as a temporary offer that shows no signs of ever reappearing.

What makes this release all the more interesting is that it was not the first instance of Fire Emblem characters in the West. Indeed, they first appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee with Marth and Roy, and it was their success here that prompted the games to be localised.

Ever since the Blazing Blade, every entry in the series has been released internationally, with one exception - New Mystery of the Emblem. This means that the Satellaview content of the original Mystery of the Emblem is not accessible in the West at all.
