From its inception back in 2004, theMonster Hunterseries has only gone from strength to strength, the already-massive fanbase growing with each entry. And with each new game in the series, the number of monsters you can hunt grows too, filling the gorgeous environments with life and brand-new items for you to craft from them.

In those 20-odd years, you can imagine the roster has grown to be quite significant, featuring a plethora of large and small monsters. While no game could reasonably manage to bring them all back, it does give a good reason to return to each game. Now let’s check out just how many monsters there are in total.

How Many Large Monsters Are There In Total?

Large monsters are the calling card of the series, the big beasts that make up the vast majority of the hunts in the game. They are all functional bosses in their own right, though absolutely scale in terms of difficulty. No one will say Arzuros is as strong as a Gore Magala by any stretch of the imagination.

From the humble beginnings of fewer than 20 Large Monsters in the original Monster Hunter game, that number hasskyrocketed to approximately 250 Large Monsters. This is taking variants, subspecies, deviants and the like into account, though there would still be a staggeringly high number even discounting them.

This is only taking the mainline games into consideration. With games like Frontier and Stories taken into account, that number would jump up dramatically.

How Many Small Monsters Are There In Total?

Large Monsters steal the show in the games, but the world would feel so much more empty without Small Monsters. These little guys are rarely ever a threat, though they flesh out the world and can have plenty of fun gimmicks of their own. There’s no large monster that blasts itself across the battlefield in fright once they’re hit quite like a Bombadgy.

Small Monsters have been part of the series since the very first entry as well, and had a respectably large number even then of around 15. That number, too, has grown exponentially over the years witharound 80 Small Monsters in the series now.Clearly, Large Monsters have grown much more, though certain Small Monsters have a tendency to reappear quite a bit, too.

How Many Monsters Are There In Total?

Whenever a Monster Hunter game talks about the total number of monsters it has in it,this includes Small and Large Monsters, even if it’s typically only the large ones that players are on the lookout for. It plays up the numbers a little bit, but some of those Small Monsters give some pretty great armor sets and weapons, too.

If we’re talking collectively, there are approximately 330 monsters in totalcounting both the large and small ones. That’s a pretty big number considering so many of them are custom-made, especially when you consider the sheer diversity of forms they come in. Making something like Nu Udra function is an achievement worth celebrating in a cast of over 300 monsters.

Of course, no game has every monster, but some have tried their best to include as many as possible.Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate currently holds the record, boasting a cast of monster, large and small included, of 129 monsters. In fact, Monster Hunter Generations at launch still had the largest roster of monsters in general, only surpassed by the later Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak with 112.
