As you progress through the campaign, you’ll eventually find a Nemesis, which appears as a purple corpse with a sword sticking out of it.
Nemeses are marked on the map by an orange circle, and interacting with them is more than worth your time. Below, we’ll take a look at everything you need to know about the Nemesis system, including what they drop and what Empowering them does.

Nemesis System Mechanics
A Nemesis is a type of encounter that can be found in normal maps, Monolith Echoes, and inside Dungeons. Activating one will show you four items that the Nemesis will drop once you defeat it. You also have the option toChallengethe Nemesis outright,Empowerits loot, orBanishit entirely.
If you choose to simply challenge the Nemesis, you will be rewarded with the four presented items, as well as some Shards. The next Nemesis you encounter will havefour different items available.

If you choose to Empower the Nemesis, itsfour items will be upgraded, up to two times. Upgraded items can transform Rare and Exalted items intoTier 7 itemsorincrease their Forging Potential. Additionally, Empowered Unique items cangain Legendary Potentialor evenbecome Legendary itemswith additional affixes.
When you Empower the Nemesis, you will still have to fight it, but it will insteadonly drop Shards. Once you’ve Empowered it two times, you’ll have to challenge it, at which pointdefeating it will drop the Empowered loot.
Nemesis loot isbased on your current level, and always includesat least one Unique.
Nemeses In Multiplayer
Every player in a multiplayer session has their own Nemesis loot drops, and they can beEmpoweredorChallengedseparately. When one player activates the Nemesis, it will appear, and all players can fight it, butonly the player who activated it will have their loot Empowered or dropped.
However, the Nemesis can then be activated by each other player, allowing everyone to get their chance to Empower it or not. This meansyou won’t lose your Nemesis loot if someone else activates it.
The Egg Of The Forgotten
Occasionally, Nemesis loot may include an item called theEgg of the Forgotten. This lets you place one of your own Uniques that lacks Legendary Potential or Weaver’s Will in the Nemesis’s loot, letting you Empower it.
If you don’t put an item into the Egg of the Forgotten, it will insteadbecome a random Unique.
The chance for an Egg of the Forgotten to appear increases at certain level stages, with up to a60 percent chance to appear at level 100.
