After working your way through every Mages Guild recommendation inOblivion Remastered, gaining access to the Arcane University in the Imperial City, and undertaking a multitude of quests therein, you have done a great deal to cement your status within the institution’s hallowed halls. The saga against nefarious necromancers will soon reach its zenith as you commence ‘Ambush’, this latest operation.
Find out how to navigate a combat-heavy encounter, felling Falcar and getting your heroic hands on the Colossal Black Soul Gem. Bringing back this prize will lead you straight to the Mages Guild questline’s grand finale, so your archmage reward is within sight!

How To Start ‘Ambush’
As’Ambush’is quite far into Oblivion Remastered’sMages Guild questline, the obvious major prerequisite is…nearly every Mages Guild quest. Thus, you will need to havetraveled to each of the Mages Guild branches, earning their recommendations.
Furthermore, upon beinggranted access to the Arcane University, a plethora of quests will need to be completed, including’The Necromancer’s Amulet'.

When you have achieved the above, speak with Hannibal Traven at the Arcane Universityin the Imperial City. You’ll surely know where to find him by this point, as Traven is the Mages Guild’s Arch-Mage.
Traven will send you toSilorn, which will be marked on your map as anAyleid Ruinsituatedsoutheast from Skingrad.

Once you have arrived at Silorn, you will findthree Battlemagesnamed Iver, Merete, and Thalfin. They each have their own range of expertise, as you will find if youspeak to them about their skills. Ideally, you will deploy them as follows:
Take care not to head further into the Ayleid Ruins here before getting this all straightened out, as the odds are good thatyou will be spotted by the necromancersbefore your affairs are in order.
Confront Falcar
Speak withThalfinto commence the operation. When the fight begins, your allies will likely be fine, so long as you’ve assigned them in the above order.Falcar and three necromancers will appear, and there are a couple of ways this can all go down.
Dungeon Dive
Thenormal route, so to speak, involvesFalcar making a run for it into the ruins' interior, at which pointyou will be forced to navigate Silorn proper, doing battle against a multitude of further necromancers en route to a showdown with the disgraced former leader.
If you’re following this route -which may prove necessary if you lack certain spells or stealth capabilities, and is surely the approach which Bethesda most likely intended -Silorn has three main zones, and Falcar is found at the final zone,Silorn Buroseli.
Be advised thatin addition to necromancers, there are also plenty of slaughterfishspecifically in the second zone,Silorn Sedorseli.
At the end of your sojourn through Silorn,Falcar will attack you. He’s a boss-level creature, and he’s highly likely tosummon wraiths, skeletons, and such. More surprisingly,Falcar is quite proficient with the dagger he wields, and it’senchanted with fire.
Treat your skirmish with Falcarless as a conventional conflict against a mage, and more like you’re dealing with a melee-oriented attacker. His swiftness means you’ll need to stay on your toes, so have healing spells and/or potions at the ready. When he’s down, takehis Colossal Black Soul Gem.
Fast Finish
There’s another way to all this, so long as you have the means at your disposal. When Falcar first makes a break for it toward Silorn’s interior - that is to say, before he gets inside and you’re forced to explore the dungeon- you can, in fact, get the Colossal Black Soul Gem.
It’s long been proven by veteran Oblivion players that Falcar can be handled with a finer touch.Paralysis spellswill hold him in place before he can get inside. you’re able to alsosneak up to him, potentially withinvisibility active.
Either way, pickpocketing the Soul Gem from himworks just fine for continuing the quest objectives. It’s a real time-saver, although there is perhaps something to be said for leaving the guy to wander out there. Oh well!
Finish The Quest
Regardless, once you have the Colossal Black Soul Gem, return to the Arcane University. Seek out Hannibal Traven, of course;hand the item over to him, and Oblivion Remastered’s Mages Guild ‘Ambush’ quest will complete. One more to go!
