While some quests inThe Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivioncan test your mettle and build, the Anvil Recommendation quest for the Mage’s Guild is unlikely to offer much in the way of difficulty. It’s a straightforward, ‘Go here, fight this person, come back’ sort of affair.

The one tricky bit would be if you’re unaccustomed to fighting mages. Thankfully, the game throws a major bone, so even if you find yourself outclassed, you’ll have a bit of backup. Probably.

How To Start The Anvil Recommendation Quest

Starting Anvil Recommendation follows the same process as most of the Mage’s Guild quests.Head to Anvil in southwestern Cyrodilandspeak to the master of the Mage’s Guildhall,a woman named Carahil.

She’ll give you a short introduction to the quest: you’re to deal with a practical problem out in the field. Specifically, you need togo to the Brina Cross Inn north of the city and deal with what she believes to be a rogue magepreying on passing merchants.

You can ask her questions about the situation, but in response, she’ll say thatif you’re not usefulin the field and in danger, you’re not much use to the Guild.

Carahil will give you the name ofthe local contact, a mage named Arielle Jurard, and send you on your way.

How To Find The Rogue Mage

TheBrina Cross Inn is about 275 meters away, almost directly north of Anvil. Head into the inn - during the day, you’ll find Arielle wandering about the main room.

She’ll tell you that you shouldpose as a wandering merchant and talk to Christophe, the innkeeper, about a room. She’ll meet you once you’re in your room, and then you may rest until the next day.

You can either tell Christophe you’re a merchant or keep it to yourself; the result is the same. Shortly after you’ve rented, a woman named Caminalda will approach you and suspiciously ask if you’re a merchant. Again, your response doesn’t matter, sodo whatever suits your current character best.

Next,go upstairs to the last room in the inn and wait for Arielle. She’ll arrive in about a minute. She’ll ask that, once you’ve rested, you head east toward Kvatch and confront the rogue mage when they appear. At that point, she and another Guild mage will step in to deal with the matter.

While theyshouldstep in, in our testing for this mission,Arielle only came to our rescue once out of three attempts, even if we let the fight drag on. Be sure you’re ready to handle fighting a fairly skilled caster before continuing.

After resting the night, your quest should progress, and you can head out. You’ll encounter the rogue mage about 50 meters east of Anvil.

How To Beat The Rogue Mage

You’ll face Caminalda on the road. Beating her isn’t too tough, especially if you’re a caster yourself. She’ll start bysummoning a Skeleton or a summoned weapon and attack you. Even wearing just her blue dress and pants, she’s got pretty good defense.

Caminalda alsouses Ice-based Destruction magic and heals herself frequently, so you’ll need to do a lot of damage quickly to burn through her health.

In the event Arielle actually does come to your aid, she’ll summon a minor Daedra to assist as well, making the fight atleasta three-on-two if Caminalda has her own summon on the field.

We’re going to assume you defeat Caminalda with or without Arielle’s help. When you do,speak to Arielle again, and she’ll tell you to return to Carahilfor your recommendation.

you may alsoloot Caminalda for the key to her roomat the inn, 120 Gold, and three potions. Her room has a chest in it to loot.

True to her word, with the situation dealt with,Carahil does agree to write a recommendation. She’s a bit taken aback that you had tokillsomeone, but with her letter in the mail, you’ve completed the Anvil Recommendation quest.
