Whilst chugging through the desert on a train, in the post-apocalyptic world ofRoblox’sDead Rails, fuel is essential as it’s the only resource that is required for progress. Understanding how to keep the fuel tank full, whilst not losing out on too much money, is vital to winning the game.
This guide will aim to explain what fuel values are, which items can be used as fuel, and which items are more valuable to you sold rather than burned. Without further ado, let’s go through what items can be used as fuel first.

What Is Fuel?
Any item that can beburned to keep your train goingis considered to be fuel, and many items fall under this category.
Items that are considered fuel will havea ‘FUEL’ tag on them, along with any other tags such as ‘CORPSE’, ‘JUNK’, and so on.Not all fuel items are equalthough, as they don’t all refuel the tank an equal amount.

How Does Fuel Work?
The fuel meter inside the train is agauge representing how full the tank is, and each fuel item will refuel the tanka different amount. The unit of measurement here is unknown, but there are 50 pegs on the gauge.
The weakest fuel source in the game is paper, such as newspapers and wanted posters, and these only refuel the tank one unit at a time. Taking that value as a baseline, here are all the itemsthat can be used as fuel sources, and their respective fuel values:

Newspapers and Wanted Posters
Books, Wheels and Horse Corpses

Wolf Corpses, Ropes and Wooden Paintings
Chairs and Werewolf Corpses

Coal
12.5 Units
As you can see, four pieces of coal can fill up the entire tank, but how long will that last then?
Translating Fuel To Distance
It’s hard to calculate exactly how fuel translates to distance covered, as the traingains momentum when you start it, and then reaches its maximum speed of 64.
From our findings, it seems that, at maximum speed, one unit of fuel can take you just above 300 meters, and as such, one coal can take you just under 4000 meters forward.

What To Use As Fuel
So, from all this being said, there are a lot of items to pick from to use as fuel, so which items should you use?
As a rule of thumb, any items that can be soldshould be considered last, so let’s focus on which itemscan’t be soldfirst.

Description
Papers, such as Newspapers and Wanted Posters
These can be found everywhere, and seeing as they can’t be sold but only give one unit of fuel, they are onlyuseful in the very early game.

Zombie, Wolf, and Horse Corpses
All of these can’t be sold, andZombies in particular are the second-best fuel source in the game. Don’t leave Zombie corpses behind after looting buildings, and instead use them to fuel up first, and if you, for some reason, killed Horses, they are a good substitute.
Of course, coal will always be the best fuel source, but it’s so scarce that you can’t rely on it alone.Later in the game, when you’ve bought everything you need, and have plenty of healing items, coal is going to be your main fuel source.
Now, except for coal, these items arereally easy to find in the world, but if you were especially unlucky, or just need anything to fill up the fuel tank, aim for “JUNK” fuel items first. Any Barrels, Wheels, Chairs, Books, and Rope are only sold forfive dollars each, so these can be used in such scenarios.
If all else fails, this is when you should useany other corpse you’ve got. Keep in mind, these sell for a lot more, so really only use them if you’re completely out of options, as that money could be used to buy coal anyway.
What’s The Best Strategy For Fuel?
When starting the game, it’ll prompt you to buy a piece of coal, butthis isn’t required for progress. What you’re able to do instead, issell the Gold Bar, and use it tobuy a shotgun instead, and then use the remainder for ammo for it. There is a stand with Newspapers on it in the starting area, and you canuse these for fuel at first.
If you’d like to get rid of the text at the top of the screen, there is a good strategy for the beginning:Wait for nightfall, and whilst you’re at the base, you can have the turrets which are mounted on the wallstake out a bunch of enemies for you. If you’re lucky, these will be Werewolves, which sell for 20 dollars each, or Vampires, which sell for 15 dollars each. Then, you can buy a shotgun and coal right away.
This isn’t a lot of fuel, but fortunately, there will always be a houseright next to the starting area - and houses always have at least one Zombie inside them, and one or more items. If the items are junk, burn them if you have to, and if they aren’t, sell them to buy coal, andburn the Zombie, or Zombies, for fuel. Then, you can start your journey forth.
On your way, stash any junk you find to sell it, and use the Zombies you kill as fuel. If you find coal, and your tank isn’t nearly full, use it immediately. Over time, you’ll find more coal than you’ll need, and at this point you canignore the Zombies you’re killingand instead just rely on coal alone.
We generallydon’t recommend buying coal(except, of course, for the tutorial to go away), unless you don’t know what to spend money on since your wallet is full.Always prioritize ammo and meds first, since almost anything can be used as fuel down the road.
