Joining the Mages Guild is actually a pretty involved process inOblivion Remastered, requiring you to complete a task for every individual Mage Guild building spread throughout the world of Oblivion. This will take a little bit to do, but is well-worth the effort, since entering the Mages Guild is one of the only ways to enable you toenchant your gear.
The Cheydinhal Recommendation Quest is one of the ones that you’re going to need to complete to get into the Mages Guild proper, and it’s one of the more unusual ones involved in the questline. Here’s everything you need to know, step-by-step.
How To Start The Cheydinhal Recommendation Quest
Once you’ve got theQuest to join the Mages Guild, you’ll have quest markers pointing you to each Mage Guild building spread throughout Cyrodil. One of these is going to point you toCheydinhal, which is on thenortheast side of the map, in between Imperial City and Morrowind.
After you make it to the city, follow the quest marker to the Mages Guild building; it’ll be abuilding marked with a stained-glass eye symbol. If you enter the city through the West Gate, the Mage Guild building will be on your right, past one building and near a statue.
Speak To Falcar
Once in the building, you’ll need tospeak to Falcar, who leads the Guild in Cheydinhal. He’s going to be exceptionally rude, and task you with finding a ring and bringing it back to him. The ring is in a well, and he’ll tell you toget the key to unlock the well from Deetsan.
This will officially add the Cheydinhal Recommendation Quest to your journal.
Speak To Deetsan
Deetsan will also be located in the building. You’ll need to talk to her, butif Falcar is in earshot of your conversation, she is not going to give you the key. Instead, she’ll tell you to come back when Falcar isn’t around.
Once either Deetsan or Falcar has moved into a different room, you can have a proper conversation with her. She’ll give you the key, butshe’ll also teach you a spell calledBuoyancy, which is going to allow you tobreathe underwater for 30 seconds.
Go To The Well
Thewell is located directly behind the Mages Guild building. You’ll need to unlock it with the key and go inside.
Once you’re here, you’ll need to immediately cast theBuoyancyspell, as you’ll be underwater right from the start. This spell can be recast while underwater, so provided you have enough Magicka regeneration, you’ll be able to stay underwater indefinitely.
After you’ve castBuoyancy,head into the chamber ahead of you, then turn to the right. There is going to be a body lying on the ground in the water, named Vidkun. Search the body, andtake the Ring of Burden. This ring has no value whatsoever, but it weighs 150, which isalmost certainly going to over-encumber youthe moment you put it in your inventory.
Without theBuoyancyspell, you’d drown before you were able to exit the well, which is exactly what happened to Vidkun. But, recast that spell if you need to, and work your way to the exit.
Go Back To Deetsan
You’ll be walking extraordinarily slowly, but head back inside the Mages Guild building, andfind Deetsan and talk to her. She’ll reveal an argument between her and Falcar, and that Falcar left.Deetsan will have you search Falcar’s roomfor anything suspicious, as well as see whether he wrote a recommendation before he left.
you’re able to drop the Ring of Burden anywhere you’d like after talking to Deetsan.
Search Falcar’s Room
Falcar’s room islocated in the basement. Once in the main room of the basement, Falcar’s room is straight across from you. Inside Falcar’s room, there are a few different things to search. Butwhat you’re looking for is going to be in the drawer next to his bed.
It’s going to be locked by an easy lock, and can be openedeither by lock-pickingor using a spell; theMinor Latch Crackspell opens easy locks, and is perfect for this.
Inside this drawer is going to be a Black Soul Gem. Once you pick that up, and you’ve searched more of the room, you’ll be prompted to go back to Deetsan, informing her that you did not find a recommendation, but informing her of the Black Soul Gem.
Return To Deetsan For The Final Time
After you leave Falcar’s room,take the Black Soul Gem to Deetsan. She’ll take the Black Soul Gems from you andwrite you a recommendation for the Mages Guild University herself.
