You’ve already got your work cut out for you if you want to selectively breed all 29 species of frogs inMudborne, but for those who’d like to take their tinkering to the next level, what about trying to breed the two potential variations of each base frog species in the game?

You’ll need to do a bit of thinking to deduce which mushrooms to toss into the magic muds you’re using to make frog species variants in Mudborne, but doing so can provide a number of benefits past just helping to replenish the life and vitality around the pond.

Variants Change Your Standard Frogs' Traits

Whether it’s when you’re pursuing the opening of the North Reflection Pool or just as you’re tinkering with different types of magic mud, you’ll find a series of variations on the 29 standard species of frogs in Mudborne. Each species has two variations, which means there are a total of 87 unique genetic sequences to create in the game.

When youlook at a frog’s pagein your Encyclopedia, you’ll see a wealth of information about them that will help you continue tobreed that species into new generations, such as which traits they change and their potential changes to the natural environment if applicable. On the right side of this screen, beneath that species' genetic key, you’ll see three icons for variants. The base species is the first variantlogged in this way, considered the “standard” variant of this frog.

Then, if you hover over each of the two icons forvariant frog species, you’ll see a hint about which traits to change to make this new variant. One of the first potential variants you can make is the Royal Mudlurker, a variant of the Vast Mudlurker described as being “a pungent variant fit for a king” resulting in a genetic coding wherein its odour and nobility stats are both maximized.

When making variants, you typically need tocarefully create magic mud to increase or decrease a specific A.N.O.U.R.E.S. statisticto fit the clue offered in the Encyclopedia if it mentions that this variant is more or less or a certain statistic. Additionally, there are some variants that you’ll breedusing a different base frogthan the base species. For example, you’ll get a standard Weeny Sponge for minimizing Amplitude and Saturation when breeding with Common Green eggs, but doing so with Dozy Dreamer eggs instead gives you a variant.

Variant creation is tracked with its own achievement separate from breeding for base frog species, but some variants (such as the Pungent Green) are required to progress the story.

Variant 1: +Amplitude, +Odour, and +Ribbit

Variant 1: Reverse the frog’s Amplitude and Saturation stats.

Variant 1: Lower Odour, Umbrage, and Edacity by 1.

Variant 1: Lower Nobility, Umbrage, and Edacity.

Variant 2: Lower Amplitude and Saturation by 1.

Variant 1: Use a Dozy Dreamer as a base.

Variant 2: Have a Towering Prince in the frog’s lineage.
