There are a lot of characters to choose from inDon’t Starve Together. While many have unique perks and features, you’re able to’t go wrong with Wilson, so is a simple character that can help you learn the ropes of the game. If you are new to Don’t Starve Together though, you may need a little help.
In this guide, we are going to take a look at how to play Wilson in Don’t Starve Together. This will cover some basics to help you succeed with such a simple character. Thankfully, we’ll also look at some tips to help you survive and thrive in the world.
Wilson Basics
As with every character, Wilson has three main stats, which you can see below.

If you’ve clicked around on other characters, then you may notice thatthis description is a bit sparse.This is because Wilson is abasic character that is best for new players.While he may not be the overall best, he can still be great for those playing for the first time. Overall, there is no huge benefit or downside to picking Wilson as your first character.
Wilson’s Skill Tree
Wilson has a skill tree that you can progress through with Insight Points. As you survive longer in the world, you’ll get more Insight Points that can be used to invest in certain skills. Characters in Don’t Starve Together have unique trees, andfor Wilson, you’ll see the following four categories.
This affectshow long your torcheslast andhow bright they are.
Alchemy
Unlocking these skills gives younew crafting options that let you transmute items(such as turning twigs into logs).
Beard
These affect theperks gained from your beard.For example, you canincrease insulation from your beard and eventually stash food in it.
Insulation provides resistance to Freezing, which happens in the Winter.
Affinity
These are unique affinities thatprovide a damage boost, as well as new recipes.
By clickingWilson’s head icon on the right-hand side of the toolbar,you can see the full tree and click on each thing to get a description. All yourunused Insight Pointswill also be displayed here.
You’ll get your first Insight Point after surviving for three days. From there, you’ll be able to earn a total of 15 Insight Points after surviving for 68 days. These perks are tied to your account, so they will continue on between worlds.
Which Skills To Invest In
So, which skills should you invest in? Overall, if you spread your points out equally, you can succeed. If you are looking to go the extra mile though,we suggest focusing on Alchemy.This comes in handy as yougain new materials and unlock things to craft.
TheAlchemy skills are considerably better than the Torch skills,so we recommend prioritizing Alchemy. After you’ve maxed out this skill category, you caninvest in Beard skills and eventually unlock the ability to store food in it.
Shadow Or Lunar Affinity?
The two affinities that you may invest in are either Shadow or Lunar. With Shadow Courtier picked,you’ll take less damage from Shadow creatures and deal more damage to Lunar creatures.You’ll also unlock a few crafting recipes forPure Horror, Dreadstone, and Nightmare Fuel.
As a Lunar Wilson,you’ll take less damage from Lunar creatures and deal more damage to Shadow creatures.Lastly, you’ll unlock the new recipes forPure Brilliance and Infused Moon Shards.
Ultimately, the choice is up to you, but it’s important to keep in mind thatyou will generally fight more Shadow creatures while playing.As such, the Lunar affinity would be a good pick (due to it letting you deal more damage to Shadow creatures).
Wilson’s Beard
What’s the deal with Wilson’s beard? The longer you stay alive,the more his beard will grow.As it grows, the beard willprovide more insulation(which can be further increased on the skill tree), and shaving it off (with a razor) willraise your Sanity and give you Beard Hair.
A Razor is made withtwo Flint and two Twigs.
It takes 16 days for Wilson’s beard to fully grow and once cut,you’ll get nine Beard Hairs.These hairs can then beused as fuel or in the construction of a Meat Effigy.This effigy serves as a point of resurrection;when placed in the world, you’ll revive at the nearest Meat Effigy.
To make a Meat Effigy, you’ll need the following items.
After you die and resurrect at the Meat Effigy, it will disappear. Additionally, Wilson’s beard will be gone. Overall, the Meat Effigy is incredibly valuable. Since Wilson can grow his own beard hair, they are pretty easy to make if you play as him.
Since it takes 16 days for Wilson’s beard to grow, and it doesn’t continue to grow after this,we suggest cutting it once it reaches the maximum length.If Winter is approaching and you need insulation though, you’re able to keep it. Once Summer begins though,don’t forget to shave it off periodically!
Other characters can make a Meat Effigy, butthey will need to find another source of Beard Hairs,which can be difficult early into the game. If you do happen to need more, you can get them fromBeardlings,which are whatrabbits turn into when you get below 40 percent Sanity.
Why Play As Wilson?
Besides having a beard,there is nothing special about Wilson.This can be a downside based on your own personal preferences, butif you want a simple character, then Wilson is perfect.Typically, characters with unique perks also have a downside.
For example,Webber can eat monster foods with no consequence,and Spiders won’t attack him. The downside is thatsome neutral mobs will be hostile towards him, and he has lower Sanity than most characters.
If you don’t feel like dealing with these perks and consequences, then Wilson is a good choice. There areno gimmicks or benefits with Wilson;you can experience the world of Don’t Starve Together the way that it is meant to be. Overall,you’re just a man and his beard trying to survive.
Wilson is a great pick for new players and veterans alike. The biggest piece of advice that we can give you is to craft weapons and armor, grow your beard, and throw down some Meat Effigies. This may sound simple, but as we emphasized above, he has no downsides.
