Baki, or Baki The Grappler, is one of the classic titles in the fighting genre of anime, revolving around the Hanma family and their extraordinary physical ability. Baki Hanma, the main character of the series and the son of Yujiro Hanma, aims to become stronger to surpass his father.
The series initially started airing in the 1990s with Baki: The Ultimate Fighter OVA, and has since released many sequels. The gruesome moments and violence have made it one of the best series in the genre and a must-watch if you’re a fan of fighting anime.
The Watching Order For Baki
The Baki series includessix seasons, an OVA, and a movie. You can easilywatch the entirety of Baki by release order, as each season follows the next. For the Baki: The Ultimate Fighter OVA, it’s recommended to watch it before the Baki The Grappler (2001) because it does a pretty excellent job ofintroducing you to the series.

BAKI HANMA VS KENGAN ASHURA (2024)is an optional moviethat you may watch after completing BAKI HANMA (Season 2). However, this moviedoesn’t add anything to the main story and is entirely non-canon.
After the maximum tournament arc, the rest of the sequels were released as Netflix Original Anime.
Baki: The Ultimate Fighter OVA
The 45-minute OVA introduces you to Baki, a young martial artist who is quickly making his name as he keeps beating up people far larger and older than him. This OVAstays fairly true to the manga and covers a few scenes that were skipped in the sequels.

Baki The Grappler (Season 1) skims over the events of the OVA and introduces Yujiro Hanma,Baki’s father and the strongest creature in the world. The season highlights the conflict between Baki and his father.
Baki: The Grappler (Maximum Tournament Arc/Season 2)
The Maximum Tournament arc is where things start to get a lot more interesting. The tournament includes fighters from all over the world andintroduces many faces that you’ll be seeing a lot often in the sequels.
After the Maximum Tournament, five death row inmates around the world escaped at the same time. These inmates sensed how strong Baki had become anddecided to escape their prisons in order to fight against him.
BAKI (The Great Raitai Tournament Saga/Season 2)
Baki Hanma learns aboutthe Great Raitai Tournament in China, which happens every 100 years, and decides to take part in it. The tournament features martial artists from all over the world, including Yujiro Hanma.
Baki continues on his journey to become stronger in order to surpass his father. Heheads to the Arizona State Prison to challenge Mr. Unchained and to defeat him. The fight turns into a battle of attrition as time goes on.
A prehistoric caveman who had been sleeping for millions of yearshad just woken up. Many martial artists want to fight against this caveman who made even the dinosaurs submit to his will. Furthermore, Baki moves on towardssettling his differences with his father once and for all.
