Ever since the pilot,Yellowjacketsfans have been debating as to the identity of Pit Girl - the dark haired Yellowjacket we see being chased through the forest before dying in a pit of spikes, then being chopped up and eaten. Though she’snot the first person the Yellowjackets eat chronologically, she is the first person we see them eat on screen. But we’ve never known who she was.

Aside from knowing it can’t have been any of the adult timeline survivors, all we knew was that she had light skin and dark hair. Given she’s wearing Jackie’s necklace, and we knew Jackie died in the wilderness, the original fan theory was that it was Jackie. Since she dies via freezing to death in season one, we’ve long known that was false. That left another popular theory: Mari Ibarra. However, as the identity of Pit Girl was finally revealed in the season three finale, we have discovered that Pit Girl herself did not know of her fate until much later.

Spoilers follow for Yellowjackets season three finale

Pit Girl Is Finally Revealed

As many fans predicted (but speaking personally, sincerely hoped was not true), Mari Ibarra was indeed revealed to be Pit Girl after she was hunted to her demise. Other candidates had been Gen or Robin, with Gen’s relationship to Melissa allowing Shauna and chance to be cruel, and Robin’s status as a background character making her ‘easier’ to kill off than a fan favourite (this fan, right here) like Mari.

The arrival of Hannah the frog scientist, also light-skinned and dark haired, seemed to offer Mari a reprive. But it seems you can never escape your fate - even if Tai and Van try to fix the draw. However, as far as Mari actor Alexa Barajas is concerned, this fate was not as long running as it seemed. Barajas wasnotPit Girl in the pilot, with a completely different performer playing the role to keep up the mystery for three whole seasons. It wasn’t until season three’s scripts were delivered that Barajas discovered the truth.

“I didn’t always know, but I did have a hunch,”Barajas said to Deadline. “I think after watching the pilot, I saw this girl running in the woods, and I said, ‘I think I look a whole lot like her.’ So, I had a feeling that that this was where it was gonna all end up, and I am so excited that we finally got to do it.”

There have been more hints besides Mari’s passing similarity to Pit Girl, too. She has been antagonistic towards Shauna, which is never a smart move no matter how tempting it may be. The season also opens with her being chased - admittedly in more of a friendly game, though Shauna does viciously bite her - and it’s not even the first time she’s found herself in a pit this season, with her falling victim to Coach Ben’s deer trap.

“I think it’s so funny ’cause the fans, I think they’re on such polar opposite ends,” Barajas said of the theories. “They either really want me to be Pit Girl or they really don’t want me to be Pit Girl, but I think in the end, they both know I’m gonna be Pit Girl. And so hopefully, now that they’re getting their answers, they’ll be satisfied.”

However, this is not the last you’ll see of Barajas with at least one Yellowjackets co-star. Kevin Alves, who plays Travis, is currently directing his debut feature based off his own screenplay, Lucky Weekend. Barajas, Avles real-life girlfriend, will star alongside Alves himself. Plus, we might still get the ghost realm. Come back to me, Laura Lee.
