Summary
The original actor behindLife is Strange’s Chloe Price, Ashly Burch, has shared her thoughts on Chloe and Max breaking up inDouble Exposureand noted that she “might not have written it that way”.
You’d think that a new Life is Strange game thatbrings back the beloved protagonist who started it all, Max Caufield, would be an easy slam dunk with long-term series fans, but Double Exposure proved that things aren’t that simple. In fact, it’s long-term fans who had the biggest issues with the game, particularly when it comes to how Max and Chloe’s relationship is portrayed.

Towards the start of the game,Double Exposure lets you decide whether Chloe survived the events of the first game or notand, if you say that she did survive, it’s revealed that her and Max broke up in the years following Arcadia Bay. Considering how close the two were and what a big decision Max made for Chloe, their breakup is massively hated by fans who have taken to calling Double Exposure non-canon.
Ashly Burch Doesn’t Think Life Is Strange’s Max And Chloe Would Have Broken Up Either
It’s been madeveryclear how most Life is Strange players feel about Max and Chloe’s relationship in Double Exposure, but it turns out that it’s not just them. TheGamer recently attended theBAFTAs 2025red carpet and had the chance to interview Ashly Burch, who notably played Chloe Price in the original Life is Strange and its Before the Storm DLC.
When asked about what she thought of Max and Chloe breaking up in Double Exposure, Burch noted that being an actor means putting a lot of yourself into a character, but ultimately having to pass them off and not being in control of their story. Burch said that she respects the developers for deciding what’s best for the game, but that her own canon wouldn’t have had it going down that way.

They decided that’s what was best for the game and I respect that. My own canon in my head, I might not have written it that way, but we all have our own head-canons. It’s a funny thing to be like, ‘I love that character and I put so much of myself into her’, but she’s someone else’s baby now. - Ashly Burch
While it seems that Burch agrees with most fans and thinks Max and Chloe would stand the test of time together, that’s sadly not the version of Double Exposure that we got. With that entry seemingly being a big loss for Square Enix, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether we’ll ever see Max and Chloe reunite, despite what the game’s ending teased.
