The new Loungefly Astromech Droid mini backpack might not be exactly what you’re expecting. While it is still unmistakably a Loungefly product, the company’s gimmick tends to be creatively transforming famous characters into backpacks. R2 isn’t the whole backpack for this new design, but there is something that makes the Star Wars droid’s latest Loungefly product different from any you’ve seen before - its light.
R2 has a little red light on its front and, in case you didn’t already know, that light indicates the droid’s mood. It’s why the light goes from red to green when Luke pats R2 on the head. While the backpack’s light won’t change color when your mood changes, the R2 design does have a working red light embedded in it that can be turned on and off.

The rest of the backpack has a blue, black, and white color scheme to match R2’s design, and Star Wars print on the interior. Joining it in the new The Power Of The Force range is a convertible tote bag and a zip-around wallet. The tote bag has a similar retro aesthetic to the R2 mini backpack and can be switched from a bag you carry to one you wear on your back with ease, depending on what you need in the moment.
The wallet has been made to match but also designed to look good alone at the same time. Again, a retro aesthetic to its design, but the R2-blue has been replaced with green to represent Luke’s lightsaber. The hilt of Luke’s iconic weapon is incorporated into the wallet’s design, and his name, along with the word lightsaber, is embroidered onto the front of the wallet.

Today’s Star Wars Loungefly drop comes after new Ewok and Samurai Vader mini backpacks were revealed earlier this week. The more traditional Loungefly designs have the characters occupying the entire backpack, the designs chosen effectively polar opposites. One is a very happy and fluffy little Ewok, while the other is a very sombre-looking samurai version of the greatest villain in movie history.
