Summary

Marathon’s Closed Alpha is currently ongoing, and it’s revealing that the game has some strong Aim-Assist options that players (especially on PC) really aren’t fans of.

Although the idea of a new game fromBungieis undoubtedly exciting after the developer hasspent most of its time and resources on Destiny over the past few years, it’s safe to say that thereception to Marathon has been a little mixed since it was revealed. That reception didn’t exactly get any better when thegame’s release and Closed Alpha dates were revealed a few weeks ago.

Although Marathon’s visuals and audio instantly impressed a lot of people, its focus on extraction shooter mechanics and the big question mark surrounding its price pointdulled its impact a bit. Now that the Closed Alpha, which originally had an NDA that was reportedly removed due to the mixed reception, has gone live, it seems that the floodgates are open for feedback.

Marathon Players Really Don’t Like The Aim-Assist Options In The Closed Alpha

PC Players Are Especially Annoyed About It All

Over the past few days, Marathon’s Closed Alpha has been live, giving select players the chance to try it out for themselves ahead of its launch later in the year. The responses so far have been a bit on-and-off,with one of the emerging controversies being the game’s use of Aim-Assistand how overpowered it is.

As you can see in the clip above from Twitter user EndersFPS, Marathon’s Aim-Assist is incredibly strong and turned on by default, which makes firefights incredibly easy for a lot of players. EndersFPS pointed out that the game is “DOA” if the feature isn’t removed, a sentiment that’s shared by other players, such as Twitter user BikiniBodhi, who said it sealed the fact that they’re “not interested” in Marathon.

Aim-Assist is already controversial all-around, but it’s especially considered to be a flaw for PC players who use keyboard and mouse controls.

The backlash towards Marathon’s use of Aim-Assist has gotten to be so loud that thegame’s gameplay director, Andrew Witt, has even commented on it, noting that Bungie is trying to find parity between mouse and controllers. He also pointed out that it’s not a “must-pick kind of thing”, which is why it’s a toggle in the menu.
