Summary
Mario Kartfans really aren’t impressed with howMario Kart Worldis presenting its character select screen, which includes all of the alternate costumes on their own for an eye-watering number of slots.
Even though italready felt like we saw a lot of Mario Kart World at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, we actually got to see even more of it during its own dedicated showcase yesterday. That showcase didn’t reveal too muchbeyond heavily hinting at Rainbow Road, but it did give us a closer look at the game’s mechanics and presentation.

Sadly, it seems like one of the biggest takeaways from the Mario Kart World Direct was a negative one,as everyone quickly realised just how stuffed the game’s character selection menu is going to be. It all comes down to the fact that every alternate costume in the game has its own position on the roster, which makes for a very hard-to-navigate selection.
Mario Kart World Fans Aren’t Impressed With Its “Incomprehensible” Character Select Screen
God, It’s Going To Take Ages To Reach Cow
During the Direct,Nintendo shared a lot of the playable characters who are going to be in World, from obvious picks like Mario, Luigi, and Peach, to the stranger ones like Cow, Lakitu, and Goomba. We also got to see some of the game’s alternate costumes, which are unlocked by eating drive-thru food and then take up a position on the roster.
While alternate costumes have been something fans have wanted for ages, the way they’rebeing presented isn’t being taken well by players who dread having to go through all 14 pages of characters. The roster for Mario Kart World is stacked enough as it is, but making each costume take up its own place instead of being selectable through each driver is a confusing move.

Over on Twitter, the reaction has been mostly negative, withTwitter user stardream61016 pointing out that each costume should be consolidatedinto a specific character.Twitter user NathanielBandy1 also threw shade at the roster screen, calling it “absolutely insane” and a “complete mess of costumes”.
There does at least appear to be a “Sort” button, but we have no idea what it does yet and it still seems like it’ll be a mess to navigate through so many slots.

Other players also pointed out the similarities to some of Nintendo’s other recent games with strange UI choices, like Breath of the Wild and Echoes of Wisdom. Overall, it seems like just about everyone is confused why Nintendo decided to organise the character select screen like this and stuff it with so many costumes that could easily be their own thing. I guess it never learned from Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach.
