Nintendoalmost certainly has the richest library of games from any developer or publisher. Stretching back over 40 years now, the company’s back catalog includesMario,Zelda,Pokemon, and dozens more of gaming’s biggest franchises.
Despite having this rich history, Nintendo is often criticized for making it difficult to play its older games. Thankfully, theNintendo Switch 2is about to rectify that, as during today’s Nintendo Direct it confirmed that players will be able to play games from the GameCube on its new console.

You’ll Soon Be Able To Play GameCube Games In Handheld Mode
For years now, it seems like rumors have been floating around thatThe Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess would be coming to the Nintendo Switch. Thesame goes for Metroid Prime 2 and 3. But neither materialized, with fans desperate to play those titles on modern consoles. It looks like their prayers have been answered, though.
The new update will include the following games at launch:
GameCube games that were originally multiplayer - in this instance, Soulcalibur and F-Zero - will continue to do so when they launch on Switch 2. This will be available both locally and online, as we see four players competing in F-Zero GX.

As ever, these games will be playable if you pay for online membership. We’ll have to wait and see when the other games will be made available. Here’s hoping that the Nintendo DS library is up next at some point in the Switch 2’s lifetime, even if there was no hint of it here.
Nintendo Switch 2
The Nintendo Switch 2 is the successor to Nintendo Switch, scheduled for release on August 01, 2025. Confirmed as backwards compatible, it will play both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.
