Traditionally, triple-A developers outside of Nintendo have struggled with the company’s hardware. Nintendo’s technology has generally lagged behind that of Microsoft and Sony, making it difficult for third-party developers to create games for all three systems because of the technological constraints of Nintendo’s consoles.
This hasn’t always been a negative; Nintendo’s consoles often prioritise price over power. We could be leaving this era, however, as the Nintendo Switch 2 is considered reasonably powerful, and many fans believe the console is also quite expensive, too.
A Joy to Work With
“The Nintendo Switch 2 has been a joy to work with,” Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford says during the video. “It’s very powerful. It’s an incredible machine in a very tight form factor, and we love being on the bleeding edge with our graphics and the experience we’re creating. The Nintendo Switch 2 makes all that possible.”
Borderlands 4 won’t be the first game in the series to release for the Nintendo Switch. The Borderlands Legacy Collection was released on the original Switch in 2020. However, this will be the first time a mainline Borderlands game will be released at the same time on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and a Nintendo console.
“Usually, we’ll have to port a game to a console,” Pitchford says. “But in this case, we’re making Borderlands 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2 […] It’s pretty astonishing how perfect this platform is for Borderlands 4.”
As outlined in the video, Borderlands 4 is intended to be the most expansive entry in the series. The story is one you’d expect from Borderlands. You play as a Vault Hunter leading a rebellion against a tyrannical being called the Timekeeper, and odds are, you’ll probably encounter some zany characters along the way.
Borderlands 4 releases September 12 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
