With its release date moved forward to September 12and a State of Play presentation giving us a detailed look at gameplay yesterday evening, we now know 4than ever. Despite maintaining its polarising sense of humour and timeless aesthetic, it looks pretty good, and, in my eyes, refreshing when compared to other such shooters on the market. It’s so steadfast in its commitment to fun shooting, looting, and humour that it feels kinda old school in the face of competition....

Summary It seems almost every successful video game is now getting a live-action adaptation. From massivetriple-A titles like God of War, torelatively niche co-op games like Split Fiction, studios are champing at the bit for the next big video game adaptation hit. The likes of Arcane, Fallout, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Last of Us have paved the way for this wave of adaptations. The trend is so strong at the moment that a live-action movie forClair Obscur: Expedition 33was announced months before the game was even out....

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the beginning ofClair Obscur: Expedition 33for weeks. If you’ve seen the trailer, itunfortunately gives away pretty much everything. But even knowing what was going to happen, I was still moved by the prologue’s beautifully melancholic depiction of something games don’t often deal with: the inevitability of death. Death is all over video games, of course. Killing is such a fundamental mechanic of the medium that we have to refer to the only games out there thatdon’t make us solve every problem with violence as ‘cozy’....

Summary Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s25-40 hour runtime simultaneously felt like theperfect length for an RPGand nowhere near enough. After completing the game, I was personally yearning for more time in Lumière and its various dangerous locales. Now, one eagle-eyed player has found compelling evidence to suggest that the game could have, in fact, given us a longer runtime than it already is, or will be getting additional content to bolster its length in the future....

Before going into yesterday’sSwitch 2 Direct, everyone had their own wish list of what they wanted to see. While I’m sure not many people had my picks ofSplatoon4, aGTA 5port, or anythingKingdom Hearts, the one game thateveryoneexpected to see was a new 3DMario. Whenever a new Nintendo console launches,a big mainline Mario game is guaranteed to follow, or at least be teased for further down the line. Or so you’d think....

One of the best parts of theDune: Awakeningbeta that I haven’t seen many others mention is its proximity voice chat. I had some hilarious interactions over the course of the closed beta weekend, the highlight being the distant screams of a player I’d just been chatting to about sandworms getting eaten by a sandworm. The starting zone is restricted to 40-player servers, which, considering the size of the maps, can either make your world feel very busy or totally isolated....

It’s no surprise that Secret LairMagic: The Gatheringcards can get a little out there with their designs. From funky borders to stylized artwork to transforming cards that were never meant to flip, there are a lot of neat cards to find from these drops. The SpongeBob SquarePants: Internet Sensation Secret Lair Drop takes some of the internet’s best SpongeBob memes and transforms them into some delightfully infuriating cards to bust out at your next Commander night....

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33is a game that’s full of surprises, and nothing better exemplifies this than the abrupt introduction of a relationship system at the beginning of Act 2. While most other games would establish a system like this in the opening hours, it takes Expedition 33 until Verso joins the party to introduce this method of bonding. Each of the party members, aside from Verso, has a whole series of relationship conversations, each with their own rewards, and some even have their own dedicated side quests....

I gaveAssassin’s Creed Shadowsa good ol’ college try. After putting 15 hours into the game and trying desperately to meet the series where it’s at nowadays, nothing about it clicked with me. I kept with it for much longer than I normally would have because the feudal Japanese setting reminded me of playingGhost of Tsushima, another open-world game I love. This week, I finally put down Assassin’s Creed Shadows thanks to theGhost of Yoteirelease date reveal trailerthat unceremoniously went live on the PlayStation Blog....

I played a whole bunch of games at theNintendo Switch 2Experience in Los Angeles over the weekend, and I got a lot of hands-on time with the Joy-Con’s new mouse mode.Metroid Prime 4, Civilization 7,Super Mario Party Jamboree, andDrag x Drivewere all there and specifically set up for mouse mode. The experience was great, and I’m convinced that mouse mode will add a lot of flexibility and opportunities for new types of games on the Switch 2....
