Summary
For some time now,Sonyhas hadits own rendition of Marvel’s popular MCU cinematic intro, except in place of characters like Iron Man and Captain America arePlayStationfigures likeNathan DrakeandKratos.
In the years since it first debuted, the intro has shifted as more characters within PlayStation’s portfolio debuted, though several, such as Nathan Drake, Ratchet and Clank, as well as Sackboy remained as constant fixtures.
Unfortunately, it seems like Sackboy’s run as a key part of PlayStation’s identity has come to an end.
R.I.P. Sackboy (2008-2025)
As first reported by PlayStation LifeStyle, it appears that Sackboy is no longer a part of the PlayStation Productions cinematic intro reel.
Apparently the change was spotted by fans who went to see Until Dawn over the weekend, including PlayStation superfan Radec, who seemingly confirmed the news on social media. It’s unclear if the change is permanent, though it’s worth noting that in the most recent iteration of the reel, Sackboy was less prominent, appearing in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment.
While Media Molecule has not been shut down by Sony, it also hasn’t developed anything since Dreams. Meanwhile,Sackboy’s latest adventure was handled outside the team, with Sumo Digital working on the 2020 release.
In that same time period,Astro Bot quickly morphed to become PlayStation’s “current” mascot, taking over the place that Sackboy had once held during thePlayStation 3era.Death Stranding 2: On the Beachis due out relatively soon, so it won’t be too long before we know for sure, but it seems like things aren’t looking all too good for one of PlayStation’s stalwart mascots.
