That said, Thursday’s trailer also provided new information on how the ranking system will work, and it’s actually pretty clever.

You’re Going To Rank Up From Z To A

As shown at the 2:32 mark of the trailer, players will start at Rank Z, and, over the course of the game, work their way up to Rank A. That’s not all, though.

The video narrator notes that “trainers who reach the top are said to have a wish granted.”

At the moment, it’s unclear what exactly the “wish” could be. In the trailer, one opponent, who is seemingly a taxi driver, says they are going to wish for all forms of transportation except for taxis to be abolished. Another opponent says they are going to wish for a marathon to be held in Lumiose City.

At the very least, it is clear that you’ll spend a large portion of the game climbing up the ranks. The ranking system is seemingly why the game is ultimately titled “Z-A.” Either way, it should give players a higher incentive to continue battling in order to reach the fabled “A” rank and have their wish granted. And, at the very least, it should provide ample means when you hit the “L” rank.
