Summary
A Reddit user claiming to be part of anActivisionfocus test group has claimed that a newPrototypegame is in development and will bring back Alex Mercer from the first game.
AsCrash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, andGuitar Herofans are more than aware of, Activision is sitting on a goldmine of abandoned or sleeping franchises. Those are some of the bigger examples that jump to mind when it comes to the company’s unused IP,but there are a few sleeper hits that occasionally brought up.
Perhaps one of the most forgotten but fondly remembered Activision series of them all is Prototype, a series made by the now defunct Radical Entertainment that had you exploring an open-world New York City and wreaking havoc to it with destructive shape-shifting powers. The series had two games before disappearing completely, but thatmightbe about to change.
Prototype Could Be Making A Comeback, Claims Focus Group Member
Don’t Count On It Too Hard, Though
As pointed out by Insider Gamingandoriginally reported on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit by Redditor Bigbyy, this alleged information comes from a recent focus study group from Activision. Alongside learning more about Black Ops 7, the Redditor was apparently told about a new Prototype game that’s currently in development.
The Reddit post detailing the leak is mostly centered around Black Ops, but Bigbyy claims at the end that another Prototype is being planned with Alex Mercer, the protagonist of the first game and villain of the second, returning in the lead role. Like other games in the series, gameplay will apparently involve “shapeshifting, transforming into other people to infiltrate areas” and will be set in New York City.
The New York City claim in particular strikes me as odd since every Prototype game so far has taken place there. It’s been a while, sure, but it’s hardly worth noting if it’s the same location for the third time in a row.
Insider Gaming reached out to Bigbyy, who said the info came from a YouGov survey with an NDA that then confirmed features that upcoming games would feature, seemingly including the new Prototype.Insider Gaming wasn’t able to verify the information themselves, but thought it was worth reporting on.
While games have leaked in a similar manner in the past, this one does seem a little far-fetched to believe with anything more than a grain of salt right now. Anyone can say anything over on Reddit and there’s no direct proof for the claim right now, which is a big one considering how long Prototype has been out of action. For now, it’s nice to think about, but not worth getting your hopes up too much.
