Summary
APS5update rolled out this week has reintroducedthe classic PlayStation themes that were temporarily available for the platform’s 30th anniversary, once again allowing you to apply a retro makeover to your console’s UI.
PlayStationmade the very popular decision to add UI options themed after each of its PS5 home console predecessors as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations in 2024. It then immediately tainted that gift by revealing the themes would only be available for a limited time. PS5 owners were loud enough about not liking the decision that PlayStation promised the themes would return, and now that day is finally here.
PlayStationpublished details about the PS5’s latest update on its blog, the focus of the information shared being on a new feature called Audio Focus. Audio Focus adds new sound options to PS5 and makes it easier to hear speech and soft sounds, particularly when using headphones.
PlayStation’s Anniversary Themes Are Back
PS1 Makeover Reapplied, Hopefully Forever
All very cool, but right at the bottom of the blog post is confirmation that, starting today (April 24), when the update is rolled out, the classic UI options introduced for a limited time during PlayStation’s 30th anniversary are coming back. The blog admits that the themes have returned following the “overwhelmingly positive response” to them when they were first introduced.
The update might not be available yet, but keep checking back as at some point today, you will be able to update your PS5 and the classic UI options will be back once you do. That means your UI will once again be able to resemble the UI of thePS1,PS2,PS3, orPS4. Yes, the PS4 is a classic console now.
It’s unclear if the themes returning also means you will once again be able to have the PS1’s start-up screen replace the regular PS5 one when you fire up your console.
PlayStation doesn’t mention how long the themes will be around this time, although the hope is that they’re now here for good. Bringing them back is a great decision - unsure why it ever needed to be a temporary thing in the first place - so making them limited again would only taint that decision again.
Once the update has been applied, there should be an Appearance option in your Settings menu. There you’ll find UI options for all four older PlayStation consoles and as soon as you select one, the makeover will be applied. Let’s hope the changes are here to stay this time.
