Summary
The open beta for Sloclap’s upcoming competitive arcade football gameRematchhas been a massive success, attracting an impressive number of concurrent players on Steam.
Sloclap is best known for its martial arts-focused titles, Sifu and Absolver. Many fans of the aforementioned titles were surprised when Sloclap announced it was pivoting towards a football game. Although the genre is sorely lacking in diversity, many were sceptical of whether there was a market for an arcade football game.

Massive Success
Well, Sloclap is sure to be pleased looking at the number of concurrent players playing the open beta for Rematch. Just on Steam, the beta has peaked (so far) at118,000 players. This peak number is five times higher than the number of concurrent players on Steam for Sloclap’s other multiplayer title,Absolver.
This is also more players than are currently playingRocket LeagueandEA FCcombined on Steam, though both games have strong console player bases. That being said, we also don’t know how successful the beta has been on consoles because the data, unlike Steam, isn’t publicly available.

Afterpreviewing the gameand playing it extensively since the open beta launched, I share the sentiment being expressed by many on Rematch’s subreddit. The game has fantastic core gameplay, but is currently being let down by latency and netcode issues. In a game where reactions and split-second inputs are vital, the servers need to be as stable as possible to facilitate smooth gameplay.
“Let Sloclap cook. The game is sound mechanically and just needs a little tightening in terms of hit registration and server performance which is easy to fix ultimately. They supported the hell out of Sifu, and I’m sure they’ll do a lot for this game,” writesCinnamenby.

Rematch’s beta currently has two ‘quick match’ modes available to play, 4v4 and 5v5. There is also planned to be a 3v3 mode at release. The ranked mode is currently limited to 5v5, as Sloclap believes this mode has the right mix of open space and tactical possibilities.
Rematch’s open beta will last until April 21, after which the game will eventually release on June 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
