Summary
BetweenUbisoft’s recent struggles and live service games being shut down left and right, it’s surprisingSkull and Boneshas managed to survive a whole year. It’s not just surviving, though. The maligned pirate game just got a year two roadmap, and people seem to be pretty excited about what’s coming to the game over the course of its next four seasons.
Ubisoft revealed the roadmap for Skull and Bones next 12 months (thanks,PCGamesN), and since season one begins today, some of the changes will have already been implemented by the time you read this, or will be by the end of the day. Season one adds Item Ascension for better gear upgrades and World Tiers introduces a new difficulty, but the best part of the first season is what’s coming at its halfway point - PvP.

The new mode has been dubbed Death Tides, and it will pit you against other players using preset ships or with a bespoke loadout you’ve selected yourself. You will join forces with other captains and attempt to take out the rival team on one of four new maps. No exact date has been revealed for the rollout of Death Tides, just the promise that it will be added to Skull and Bones via its midseason update, so probably around the end of May.
Big Things Are Coming To Skull And Bones Throughout Its Second Year
PvP, Land Combat, The Kraken, And More
PvP is probably only the second-most exciting reveal made via the year two roadmap. The top spot goes to land combat which is confirmed to be coming in season three. While you have been able to leave your ship in Skull and Bones since launch, what awaited you on solid ground wasn’t exactly all that exciting. Ubisoft showed off a little of what Skull And Bones' new land mechanics will look like, including a pirate engaged in a sword fight with a rival and using their postol to finish them off, plus what appear to be a horde of zombie pirates preparing to attack.
There’s a lot more confirmed to be coming to Skull And Bones during its second year which, let’s be honest, many of us didn’t think it would get. The highlight of season two will be the addition of The Frigate, the game’s biggest ship yet, and then in season four, players will need to be on the lookout for The Kraken. The mythical sea beast comes to Skull and Bones to cap off its second year.
Having been in development for more than a decade, and after Ubisoft sunk so much money into it, Skull and Bones may be a case of a game not being allowed to fail. It’s refreshing to see afterSuicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, which launched at around the same time, has already stopped receiving updates, andConcordwas given all of two weeks to make something of itselfbefore PlayStation pulled the plug.
