Summary
Doom: The Dark Ages' project director has revealed that the game will have an enemy that’s “similar” toEternal’s infamous Marauder, although it sounds like he’ll be a lot more tolerable.
Both Doom 2016 and its sequel Doom Eternal are widely regarded as two of the best first-person shootersof the last few console generations. While id’sDoomreboots are both mostly beloved, it’s fair to say that Doom Eternal didn’tmake quite the same impact on most players as the first game did, which is mostly down to some annoying smaller issues.
The underwater sections, overreliance on platforming sections, and “abhorrent” ammo count are just a few examplesof why Eternal is a bit of a marmite sequel, but the biggest issue that most players had with the game was one of its bosses - the Marauder. To this day, there’s not a Doom enemy who’s as hated as him, but that might change with The Dark Ages.
Doom: The Dark Ages Has Its Own Marauder Equivalent
All of the hatred is mostly down to the fact thatthe Marauder completely changes the pace of Eternal’s combat and requires your full attentionfor his varied moveset that needs to be specifically considered to take him down. Considering how the rest of Eternal is about going as fast as possible and killing without too much though, the Maruader really bugged a lot of players.
Since Doom: The Dark Ages was first revealed, many have wondered if the prequel would have some kind of equivalent to the Marauder or if id had learned its lesson. It seems that the Doom developers didn’t,as they’ve recently confirmed to PC Gamer that there’s a boss type called the Agadon Hunterthat’s “similar” to the Marauder.
According to project director Hugo Martin, The Agadon Hunter is “the new Marauder”, although that similarity is mostly down to the fact that he challenges you in a unique way. Martin explained that the Agadon Hunter is all about “parry, dodging, and weaving between projectiles” instead of just shooting and moving.
He’s not based on the Marauder. He’s not like, ‘Big Marauder,’ it’s Dark Ages, so it’s very different. But he’s similar in that a lot of the bosses they’ll challenge you in different ways. It’s all about pushing: parry, dodging and weaving between projectiles. - Hugo Martin
The Dark Ages' project director revealed that the Agadon Hunter has combo attacks that will have to be parried in sequence, akin toSekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The Doom developers also reflected on the Marauder’s infamy, noting that the main issue was due to how he was introduced to players rather than the challenge of actually beating him.
