Summary

Subnautica’sLeviathans are some of the most terrifying creatures in video game history. Despite being able to slowly punch them to death in the original game - by latching onto them with the infamous Prawn Suit technique - the game’s developers have now confirmed that there won’t be any weapons in Subnautica 2. You also won’t be able to kill Leviathans.

It’s fair to say that not many players have ever actually killed a Leviathan anyway, but it’s good to see that Subnautica is staying true to its core concept:big fish are scary. Give yourself a gun and suddenly they’re not so scary anymore, which is exactly what the developers are aiming to prove with its sequel.

Leviathans Should Be Scary, After All

As pointed out by Redditor Mamuts123 on the Subnautica subreddit, some of the game’s developers took the time to answer some player questions on the official Discord yesterday, covering topics like the size of the Leviathans, if there will be any returning animals or vehicles, and some insight into how the new co-op system will work.

Anthony Gallegos, Design Lead on Subnautica 2, revealed some interesting tidbits in theDiscord Q&A. The game will be more based on “survival and exploration”, it will include “no weapons” of any kind (including the knife, which will instead be replaced by a cutting tool), and the team is currently working on the largest Leviathan in any Subnautica game.

Outside of some tools, like the scanner that people have seen, no, we’re not having returning vehicles or creatures or planets.

Subnautica 2 takes place on an entirely new alien planet, which means we’ll likely see a new host of colorful fish, tools, ships, and other items. This also means the beloved Cyclops won’t be returning.

It’s new. So if we have a big sub, and we will, it won’t be the cyclops.

There was also this neat little bit about the inspiration behind some of the creatures in Subnautica, and we had to include it because it’s cool.

Here’s a little spoiler: all our creatures are based on real earth things at some point. Because every time you think you have an original idea that weird thing exists right here right now, at least partially.

Subnautica 2 has aconfirmed early access release date for late 2025, and we’ll likely start to see more uncovered about the game as we go - especially now that the big marketing push has started. And as Anthony succinctly puts it in Discord, “We need time to finish it. It wouldn’t be fun. It’d be busted and boring until it gets polished up.”
