Video game movies are en vogue right now. No sooner isA Minecraft Movie’sbox office domination coming to an end isUntil Dawnwaiting to replace it. We also have Five Nights and Freddy’s 2 andMortal Kombat 2later this year, withStreet FighterandThe Legend of Zelda due to follow, but the latest news is one of the weirdest yet.
It was recently announced that legendary action director Michael Bay has his sights set on a racing franchise that, while iconic in its own time, is hardly the blockbuster name you’d expect. Bay’s next movie will be an adaptation of theSegaarcade classic OutRun. What’s more,Sydney Sweeneywill be producing the movie for Universal.

Will Sydney Sweeney Appear In The OutRun Movie?
As perDeadline, the details are scant right now, but you have to imagine there will be a lot of extra details added for the movie. OutRun is beloved because of its tight driving mechanics that were substantially ahead of their time, as well as spawning a genre of chiptune music itself known as OutRun.
But narratively, there’s not a lot there. It’s a racing game. You race. There were barely even characters until years into the series with OutRun 2. Don’t let the name fool you, OutRun 2 was actually the eighth OutRun game, and released in 2003, 17 years after the 1986 original.
The other OutRuns were OutRun 3-D, Turbo Outrun, Battle OutRun, OutRun Europa, OutRunners, and the then-future set OutRun 2019.
One of these characters was Clarissa, a blonde bombshell with a high ponytail and beach stylings to match the summer vibes of the game. If Sweeney is looking to star in the movie as well as produce, the role seems tailor made for her.
This is not the first time Bay has been involved in a video game project, nor is it the strangest. Last year, it was revealed thathe would be producing a Skibidi Toilet movie, although exactly what that entails remains under wraps. Giventhe chicken jockey memes (disruptive as they may be)have propelledA Minecraft Movie to be on course for a billiondollars,we definitely live in a world where Skibidi Toilet sells tickets.
He has never outright directed a video game movie before, although both Bad Boys andTransformers(each directed by Bay) have had video game adaptations. Sweeney’s link to video games is more tenuous, with the closest being the fact she played Julia Carpenter (AKA Arachne) in the ill-fated Madame Webb, a character with a handful of minor video game appearances to her name. Maybe Clarissa will change that in OutRun.
