Whether we want to admit it or not, humans are creatures of, and often led by, emotions. They’re often passed off as reason or logic, but deep down, more often than not, they are projections of our deepest insecurities. What would happen if those insecurities were to manifest into something more visceral?
Limbus Company takes that question in the most literal way and gives it a grotesque form, and demands that the sinners face and slay them. Which anomalies have grabbed onto the heart of the collective fan consciousness and have yet to let go?
9Ardor Blossom Moth
The Moth Becomes The Flame
Most people are familiar with the adage ‘drawn in like a moth to a flame’ as something that is often presented as irresistible, only to be revealed as detrimental, or worse, deadly. Of course, this being Limbus Company, we are the ones being drawn to the flame, and with it, to our demise.
You’d be hard-pressed to find the fight now, as it was featured in a limited-time event, but when it was available, it was one of the hardest challenges in the game at the time. If her heavy-hitting DPS didn’t take out your party of sinners, her AOE burn damage did. Still, if you equipped your team with Gloom identities, then you might have had a decent chance. The word might be doing some heavy lifting, though.
8Slithering Inquisitor
A Sinner’s Visceral Warning
The Slithering Inquisitor, and all Corrupted Inquisitors for that matter, are treated the same as Abnormalities, and you are tasked with taking them out due to the threat they pose. However, once you get down to the details, where the devil always hides, you’ll realize that you and your other sinners are just an Ego corrosion away from the same fate.
What used to be arms are now twin snakes that will easily paralyze your sinners for the next turn, and that’s if the status effect doesn’t stack. Outside the myriad of status effects it can cause, it attacks instinct, meaning it’s straightforward and doesn’t deviate from its pattern of attack, making it easy.
7Four-Legged Beast
A Hunter On Instinct
Another Corroded Inquisitor, the Four-Legged Beast, isn’t a shambling snake of a demihuman. No, they are corroded into the basest form of instinct themselves: to hunt. They watch and wait, and plan their moves to how you move. It’s a stark reminder of just how close you are to being the same creature if you lose your faculties.
Though not the most complex of enemies, there is some methodical strategy to the Beast’s madness. Its attack pattern isn’t always the same. Sometimes it’ll hit you with an attack that’ll cause bleeding, which is a pretty high chance. Other times, however, you might be hit with an attack that will make you take double damage your next turn, doubly so if your sinner has the lowest HP of the bunch.
6Doomsday Calendar
First Look Into The Depth
The Doomsday Calendar is an early-game boss you encounter shortly after you finish the tutorial. Unassuming in design, but once the battle starts, this former corporation employee’s mechanics give you and your party of sinners a little taste ofsomething more complex and sinister at play.
At some point in the battle, you’re left with a choice to either sacrifice a clay doll as an effigy to the Calendar or one of your own, which comes with some consequences. There are also points where you’ll be able to sacrifice your dolls to save yourselves, making the combat feel layered and exciting.
5Golden Apple
All That Glitters Isn’t Gold
If you are modeled after an object that supposedly started the entirety of the Trojan War, you know you’re in for bad news when you’re tasked with locating and bringing it back. The Golden Apple takes both its physical and influential cues from the apple of myth, in sowing discord by tapping into the shallow desires of those around them.
Once you break through the facade of the golden exterior, the apple reveals its true nature: a rotten red apple, leaking with maggots. It’s a straightforward fight with no status effects to worry about. However, something will happen if you haveGregor as an active sinnerin your party. What? Well, we don’t want to give everything away, now, do we?
4My Form Empties
A Perversion Of Nirvana
The teachings of the Heart mantra in Buddhism, for simplification, attempt to teach that events that happen to you, in the long run, don’t matter. The main mantra is ‘Form is emptiness, emptiness is form’. There is freedom in that detachment; a path to Nirvana, if you will. My Form Empties is, in fact, not empty at all. It’s filled with false prayers and suffering from the followers who surround it.
The Anomaly itself isn’t interested in overpowering you with brute force, though it probably could. Instead, it’d prefer to bide its time and stack you with Karma until your Sinners reach 108 stacks of it, giving them an instant death. Why 108? Symbolism, of course! To reach Nirvana, you have to resist 108 earthly temptations before achieving it. My Form Empties further twists your desire for enlightenment.
3Pink Shoes
A Mirrored Aberration
It’s clear at first glance that these shoes have complete control over the ego of these unfortunate former L. Corp employees in both mind and body, and now they spend their days dancing until their feet and legs can’t take it anymore. Even then, their limbs will continue to spin, ignoring their agency. A cautionary tale reminiscent of the old Dutch fairy tale to not be shallow or vain. It’s not outright stated, but something had to have happened for these shoes to take hold of these employees, right?
You aren’t fighting the shoes directly; rather, you’re fighting the unfortunate folks who have been dominated by the shoes’ will. They aren’t much of a threat to your HP directly, but they will be swinging for your SP, driving your Sinners’ sanity low fast if you aren’t careful.
2Ebony Queen’s Apple
You Never Forget Your First
In your line of work, you face down plenty of abnormalities and aberrations that take the shape of many literary-inspired creatures daily, yetthere’s something about the first mission you takeas the clock-headed manager of your misfit band of sinners that makes it a little more real. Well, outside of dying and coming back to life, of course.
For an early boss, she’s surprisingly versatile when it comes to choosing what moves to use against you. However, none of that hardly matters once you break her Pale stems, since they don’t regenerate. Once you do, just overpower her and you’ll dethrone this queen in no time. Still, an iconic introductory abnormality, for sure.
1The King In Binds
The Burden Of The Seat
What better way to wrap up the Best anomaly list than with an audience with a king? The King In Binds caps off the Refraction Railway event, and man, was it a fantastic way to go. Even as you made your way to face him, his oppressive, imposing presence could be felt the second you entered his domain.
After your dance with his minions, you’ve piqued his attention enough to make the king, bound indefinitely to his throne, break free and rise from his chair to face you himself. Thematically elegant and he’s quite the heavy hitter too, it’s no wonder this Monarch made the impression on fans he did, despite being a limited event.
