Summary

TheMinecraftmovie is almost upon us, releasing in theaters on April 4 later this week.Ever since the first trailer back in September, we’ve known that the movie was going to be cursed no matter what - even if it ended up being good - but now that we’re just a couple of days away from the big day, critics have been sharing their opinions on what to expect.

Unfortunately, it seems as though the critical reception to Minecraft is mixed right now that it’s difficult to get a good read on it. Reviews came flooding into Rotten Tomatoes earlier today, and at the time of writing, the movie is currently sitting at a score of 53 percent, making it a rotten release.

Minecraft Movie Scores Are Extremely Mixed

A score doesn’t tell the full story though, as while Minecraft may be certified rotten, reviews appear to be extremely mixed, with almost every part of the review scale used by dozens of critics. For example, you have critics that lean towards the harsher side of opinion, likeClarisse Loughry from the Independent, who says that Minecraft “destroys the spirit of the video game”.

The Wrap’s Michael Ordoñasays that the movie ruthlessly targets fans of the game “with fan service and slapstick galore”, and is simply “a by-the-numbers Hero’s Journey” for everyone else, whileRyan Guar from Discussing Filmgoes as far as saying the Minecraft movie is “a new low for modern video game adaptations”. With the existence of Borderlands, that really is some feat.

On the other hand, you have quite a few critics that seem to have enjoyed themselves.Jordan Hoffman from Entertainment Weeklysays that the movie is “a breath of fresh air”, while a lot of critics appear to have enjoyed the chemistry between Jack Black and Jason Momoa’s characters.

To be honest, it sounds like a decent time if you’re a fan of Minecraft, and that’s probably all that the movie was going to be, if we’re being realistic. Kids and fans will spot the references, laugh at Jack Black being silly, and carry on with their days. Borderlands has proven that it could have been a lot worse, and while opinions are extremely mixed, it might be one you’re better off seeing for yourself.
