Summary

Unlike some movies and TV shows, video games don’t often revolve around love stories. Instead, relationships are typically subplots in games. Yet, that doesn’t mean games lack heart or romance. Video game love stories can tug at the heartstrings just as much as any other media can.

One of the main ways they do this is through dialogue. Many video game couples share heartfelt and romantic lines with one another in an effort to prove how much they mean to each other. The following ones are the most romantic examples.

Lae’zel (Baldur’s Gate 3)

Baldur’s Gate 3 has many wonderfully romantic lines of dialogue. Among the best is the one Lae’zel delivers in the later stages of the game if you romance her.

Lae’zel is generally a violent character who lives for battle and death. She doesn’t care about much else until she falls for the protagonist. A lovestruck Lae’zel admires a sunset, pointing out that previously she could never look past battle. Now, she appreciates life a bit more because of her love for the protagonist.

Master Chief and Cortana in the Halo series are never officially in a relationship. After all, he is a super soldier, while she is an AI implanted in his head. However, over the games, they clearly grow closer, and there is some hint at romantic feelings between the two.

At the end of Halo Infinite, Master Chief unlocks a video message from Cortana. In it, she talks about how she got to choose the person she was originally implanted in, and how she’s glad she chose him. It’s a bit of a tear-jerking line because you know this is their last interaction.

Apocalypses break up many couples, as people are generally separated or killed. Young Ellie and Riley from The Last of Us, however, do get to have some fun together, as they hang out in an abandoned mall. Unfortunately, though, things go bad, and they get attacked by infected monsters, leading to both of them being bitten.

This means they will soon turn into monsters themselves. In a romantic moment, Riley suggests that they spend their last moments together, no matter how long it is. Ellie ends up being immune to the infection, while Riley isn’t so lucky.

2B (Nier Automata)

Nier Automata has a complex story thattakes several playthroughs to truly understand. Equally complicated is the relationship shared by the two protagonists, 2B and 9S. It’s up to interpretation as to the exact manner of their relationship. What is clear, however, is that they have strong feelings for one another.

This is felt in one scene where 9S finds an audio message left by 2B. In it, she delivers a beautiful line comparing the moments they spent together with “memories of pure light.”

Quiet (Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain)

Quiet is an assassin sent to eliminate Snake in MGS5. She tries to do this with her exceptional combat ability. Yet, she is also infected with a vocal cord parasite, meaning that if she speaks to Snake, she may infect him with a deadly virus.

However, she quickly grows fond of the legendary soldier and makes a vow not to speak in order to avoid infecting him. Snake is unaware of this until she leaves him with a tape that explains everything before she departs forever. In it, she says she wishes she could’ve expressed her feelings toward him. It is quite a tragic romantic quote. Quiet seemingly loved Snake, but she could never tell him.

BioWare often makes games with great romances, but the most romantic quote in Mass Effect 3 comes from a relationship involving minor characters. On a mission, you find a message from a dead Krogan named Charr that is meant for his beloved.

The message is a beautiful poem that contains a lot of romantic lines. The best is arguably when he talks about his dream of being by her side together on his home planet. You don’t get to know much about these two characters, as you only have a couple of encounters with them, but this one poem proves how much he loves her.

Pyra (Xenoblade Chronicles 2)

Two of the main characters in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Prya and Rex, are connected to each other. They share the same life force, so it’s only natural that they’d share some sort of bond. And it certainly seems to become a romantic one.

These feelings are expressed when Rex asks Pyra if she loves the world they’re in, and she responds that she does because he’s in it. Claiming you love an entire world because of one person is incredibly romantic.

Yuna and Tidus from Final Fantasy 10 are amongthe best couples in gaming history. This is shown in the famous lake scene in which the two share a kiss and discuss plans for the future.

Toward the end of the scene, Yuna asks Tidus to stay with her “until the end.” In response, he takes things one step further, and she says he’ll stay with her not just until the end, but “always.” Promising someone you will stay with them forever is about as romantic as it gets.
