Summary

TheYu-Gi-Oh! TCGhas plenty of iconic monsters, such as the Dark Magician and the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Another popular monster from the time is Joey Wheeler’s signature monster, the Red-Eyes Black Dragon. This card is never as powerful as the other two monsters, but it has plenty of potential.

Red-Eyes as an archetype has never really had a consistent game plan. The cards have always been scattered around various playstyles. However, one consistency is that they all revolve around portraying the classic monster. With plenty of aura backing it up, there are alternate rares, special printings, and nostalgic promos to seek out. So which versions of Red-Eyes are hardest to find?

A Ferocious Alternate Art

Red-Eyes Black Dragon is pretty iconic for beingone of Joey’s best cards. So it only makes sense for it to get printed as a quarter century secret rare in Quarter Century Stampede. This particular card has an alternate art that depicts the dragon swooping down from the fiery skies.

This is the 8th alternate art of Red-Eyes and one of the harder cards to pull from the set. Being a quarter century secret rare doesn’t help when it comes to availability. Of course, that’s why rare cards are always worth chasing down.

A B In The Name

Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG doesn’t just have anime and tabletop spinoffs,it also has video games. One of these is Power of Chaos: Joey The Passion. This PC game features Joey and includes some limited-edition printings in the package.

This includes prismatic secret rare versions of Sword of Dragon’s Soul, Sebek’s Blessing, and Red-Eyes B. Dragon. This card has an interesting naming convention found on certain printings, in which Red-Eyes Black Dragon is shortened to Red-Eyes B. Dragon. Later copies will have the full name, but the further back you go you’ll find these special names.

A Trip To The Past

The 25th anniversary of Yu-Gi-Oh! saw the reprinting of some of theclassic sets from the Duel Monsters era. This includes the Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon. This card has the original card art from the anime with an ultra rare finish.

You’ll be able to identify this card by the serial number LOB-EN070. This lets you know that it’s from the reprint set and not the original. Regardless, the modernized finish is a neat quality bump for the classic card that makes it worth adding to your collection.

A Special Art Illustration

This is another version of the Red-Eyes Black Dragon that uses the B instead of Black in its name. This printing is also special because it is part of an Anniversary Pack celebrating ten years of the game.

This card is pretty hard to find since the pack itself is just as elusive. It has an alternate art featuring the Red-Eyes standing on top of molten rock, and no art box border surrounding it. It’s a unique card design and a valuable card in the collection.

I Am Red-Eyes, Hear Me Roar

The full-body Red-Eyes Black Dragon fromQuarter Century Bonanzashows off the cool design that this dragon has. It’s roaring into the sky with the red background emitting a great power. Once again, being a quarter century secret rare printing makes it difficult to find.

The Rarity Collection series has plenty of nostalgic reprints, so seeing old Red-Eyes included is no surprise. Though cards that show off more of the monster’s designs are always neat to look at and include in your deck. Now Red-Eyes just needs to be good.

A Retro Tin Card

The Collectors Tins from 2002 feature a variety of characters and their signature monsters. Joey has two tins, one which features the Red-Eyes Skull Dragon and the other which features the Red-Eyes Black Dragon.

Buying the tin automatically gives you the card featured on the box. While this may seem pretty easy to obtain, it came at a time when most players weren’t thinking about collections. It’s usually those cards that end up on the playground and tossed around. Finding one in near mint condition is a real treasure.

A Phantom Red-Eyes

This card features the classic anime Red-Eyes Black Dragon art. However, you may not see it at first glance. This is because it is hidden behind the silver shroud that isthe ghost rare foiling. This special foiling looks like a misty mirror until you tilt the card.

Then, you’ll be able to spot the card art emerging as you continue tilting it against the light. This is what makes ghost rare cards so cool. The fact that few cards even get this kind of printing makes it even more special when one of your favorites just happens to have one.

Glittering Card Text

All the early Duel Monsters era cards have some roots in Egyptian theming. At least in terms of the anime. These are monster spirits that were locked into tablets long ago, brought back to life through the Duel Monsters card game.

One of the more obscure rarities in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG pays homage to this theming with Egyptian Hieroglyphs on the foiling. The Red-Eyes Black Dragon with this particular foiling can be found in the Magnificent Mavens set. It has the secret rare style of card text for the name.

The Most Valuable Red-Eyes Card

It’s not often that two cards from the same set must compete to be the most valuable version of the card. Usually the higher rarity card takes the win. For Red-Eyes Black Dragon in Magnificent Mavens, it’s the ultra pharaoh’s rare.

This can happen for a few different reasons. At times, there are more cards of a specific version in circulation. In other cases, it’s a matter of preference with players enjoying the gold text over the prism text. It’s something that happens on a monster-to-monster basis.
