Summary
Whilerumors continue to swirl about a Gears of War Collectionlaunching onPlayStation 5, thoughwithout any PvP multiplayer, much to the disappointment of fans, it appears that, at one point, a remaster ofGears of War 2, similar toGears of War Ultimate Edition, was in the works.
Though it never took off the ground, via an environment artist, we now know it was a concept that was actually being considered. That is before work on the multiplayer component ofGears 4took off.
It’s A Small But Important Look
Taking to Twitter, Ayi Sanchez, currently an artist at Valve, shared a small glimpse at some test material that he had been working on for a potential remaster of the 2008 title. According to Sanchez, that work took place 10 years ago, dating the concept of a Gears of War 2 Remaster to 2015.
In several follow-up tweets, a separate artist, Giuseppe Navarria, shared that it was a potential project for Splash Damage Studio, though shortly after helping bring the Ultimate Edition multiplayer, the team was shifted to Gears 4.
Sanchez corroborated that claim in a post of his own.
Although it was never officially deep in development, it is still interesting to think about the prospect of an Ultimate Edition-style rendition of Gears 2. The original GoW Ultimate Edition launched in August 2015 and was never followed up, leaving the two remaining games from the original trilogy as they were. As it stands, the next Gears of War title will be E-Day.
