One of the most important things you can do in aMarvel Rivalsmatch to ensure victory is to build a well-balanced team composition. Getting the right team comp together can look like many things. It’s not all just about having two vanguards, two duelists, and two strategists.

In fact, there are a lot of more specific elements that go into creating successful team compositions that can either make or break your chances at victory. So, whether you’re brand new to hero shooters like Marvel Rivals, or just new to Rivals itself, here’s everything you need to know to balance your team composition.

How Team Compositions Work

In Marvel Rivals, team composition is a representation of your team’s skills and strengthsthat includes a variety of factors, including:

Generally speaking, you’re going to want tomake sure your team composition has at least one of each role: vanguard, duelist, and strategist.

That being said, there’s no hard and fast rule of exactly how many you should have in each roleas Rivals doesn’t have a role queue.

Hero Types And Playstyle

When it comes to the types of heroes you’re playing and playstyle, there are four basic hero types/compositionsyou need to understand.

In Marvel Rivals, many heroes can occupy different playstyles and hero types. For example, Peni Parker can play both poke and brawl.

Details

Poke

In a poke playstyle, heroes trade resources from a distance by using long-rage attacks, slowly eroding the enemy team’s resources.

Poke heroes include Peni Parker, Hela, Punisher, and Luna Snow.

Dive

In a dive playstyle, heroes play into the enemy backline, trying to catch the enemy team by surprise by playing off-angles.

Dive heroes include Venom, Thor, Iron Fist, Psylocke, Cloak & Dagger, and Jeff the Land Shark.

Brawl

In a brawl playstyle, heroes use their raw melee strength and sturdiness to play up close and personal, taking the fight straight down the middle of the battlefield.

Brawl heroes include The Hulk, Groot, Wolverine, Mister Fantastic, and The Invisible Woman.

Rush

Similar to brawl playstyles,a rush playstyle sees heroes pushing forward aggressively, often with melee attacks and high-mobility skillsto pick off enemies as they trickle back from spawn.

There are no hard and fast rules as to what defines a rush hero, though high mobility, speed, and deadly one-shot abilities help with this playstyle immensely.

Running a team comp with no strategists is an absolute no-go; this composition hardly ever works and isn’t very fun to play.

How To Balance Your Team Composition

By default, the standard team composition includes two vanguards, two duelists, and two strategistsof any type. Most of the time, this will provide you with a pretty standard and well-balanced team composition.

However,Marvel Rivals is a complicated game, and two-two-two is not always the way to godepending on the type of team you’re playing against, and what their team composition looks like.

Ultimately, the most important thing is that youpick heroes based on what roles are needed and what playstyle your team is going for.

Let’s look at someexamples of what heroes to pickbased on your team’s playstyle and role distribution.

Currently, your team has two vanguards and two duelists, but only one strategist.

Two strategists is the bare minimum for most team compositions in Marvel Rivals, so, you shouldselect a poke-based strategist like Luna Snow, Rocket Raccoon, or Loki.

Your team only has one vanguard, which can be doable, butthe composition is dive-based, so it might be better to help support with a second vanguard.

Because this is a dive composition, you shouldpick either Thor or Peni Parker. Peni is not an ideal diver but can keep up and synergizes well with Venom.

Your team currently has three strategists, more than enough to support the healing needs of the team. Plus, with Hulk’s shields, the team may be able to get by with just one vanguard.

Support your team with increased damage by picking a brawl-based duelistlike Wolverine (who can team up with Hulk), or Magik who excels in close melee range.

Your team has all selected heroes with decent mobilityor the option to sequester enemy heroes in Groot’s case. This makes for a great rush composition, as you can easily pick off enemy heroes as they trickle back or try to escape.

Because there’s only one strategist, you shouldround out the comp by picking a high-mobility strategistlike Luna Snow or Rocket Raccoon.

While balancing team composition is important, remember, there are no hard and fast rulesin Marvel Rivals. As long as you understand how the different playstyles work, you can tailor many heroes to these playstyles.

However, you’ll want toavoid actively fighting against team comp. For example, pickinga poke hero like Stormwhen everyone else is playing melee-based combatants may prove harder.

How To Counter The Enemy Team’s Composition

The last piece of the puzzle toward understanding team composition involveshow to counter the enemy team’s composition.

Once again, Rivals is a complex game with an enormous hero roster, so nothing is hard and fast, but generally speaking, different team compositions counter other compositions like so:

Brawl/Rush

While the above table represents a standard rule of thumb when it comes to countering team compositions, rememberyou still have to lean into these playstyles for these counters to work.

For example,if you’re playing a brawl or rush comp, you still have to turn around and physically fight diversin your backline to counter.
