Summary

The movie adaptation ofUntil Dawnhit theaters three days ago, and there are already a lot of people who have seen it six times. That’s because AMC has been running an opening weekend contest that tasks people with watching the film all night long, the promise of a cash prize at the end if you can outlast everyone else in the theater.

Trace Sauveur decided to take on the challenge andshared a detailed breakdown of their experience at AwardsWatch. The premise of the Until Dawn game is that the characters need to survive over and over again until the night is over, or until dawn, if you will. The movie switches it up a little and brings characters back from the dead when they die.

The promotional stunt run by AMC over the weekend plays on this by having moviegoers live through a time loop of their own. With a $5,000 cash prize on the line, Sauveur and anyone else who thought they could watch the movie six times in a row went to their local AMC to see Until Dawn again, and again, and again. Just to make the challenge even more difficult, the first showing started at 7 pm, meaning those who made it through all six showings wouldn’t be leaving the theater until at least 6:45 am the following morning.

There were strict rules in place for anyone who thought they could kill time by frequently grabbing snacks or distracting themselves with their phones. Those running the event recommended attendees leave their phones in their cars as looking at them would result in disqualification. Going to the bathroom outside of the designated breaks (between showings) would also result in getting DQ’d, and most important of all, if you fall asleep, you’re out.

On the bright side, those brave enough to face six back-to-back showings could have as many concessions as they liked. However, like the bathroom breaks, they could only grab food and drink between showings.

Perhaps predictably, despite the seemingly gargantuan task, there were still 37 people left in the running when the lights came up at the end of the sixth and final showing, Sauveur among them. Unfortunately, AMC didn’t have $185,000 to spare so that everyone could have the $5,000 prize. Instead, a trivia contest broke out, extending everyone’s stay. The questions were based on the movie everyone had just seen six times in a row, and Sauveur wound up being knocked out before the final round, meaning they left the theater after all that time empty-handed.
