Fame and Infamy are two sides of the same coin inOblivion Remastered,But whatarethey, exactly? What do they influence? Why does it matter? And how can you pump them up accordingly? This guide’ll give you the downlow on Fame and Infamy, with some tips and tricks scattered throughout.

Whether you’re a champion in search of further renown or criminal scum who revels in the thrills therein, there are practical applications to both sub-systems as well, not to mention running tallies that can help you to feel immersed in any morality-based mental role-playing ambitions you might have during your extended stay in Cyrodiil.

Fame, Explained

You’ll earnFamebycompleting main quests, closing Oblivion Gates, winning fights in the Arena questline, fulfilling conditions in the Fighters and Mages Guild factions, gaining new Daedric artifacts, and last but not least, concluding many (though not all) side quests.

The fastest way to gain Fame points galore, especially once you’ve exhausted many side quest options, is viaOblivion Gates.Since there are so many of them peppered throughout Cyrodiil (after a certain early point in the main storyline),they’re an easy source of dozens of points.

Before this is an option, and/or if closing Oblivion Gates proves too challenging at lower levels,Arena fights are an easier way to increase Fame in the early going. If you’re not advancing the main storyline for quite a while, Oblivion Gates won’t even be available for many hours!

Higher Fameincreases NPC disposition toward you, which is handy forgetting better shop prices from merchants, and arguably more importantly, get them to like you enough to progress dialogue-centric objectives in many of Oblivion Remastered’s side quests.

ThePersuasion minigamecan also accomplish this, but strong Fame bypasses this altogether. What’s more,a few side quests require high Fameto unlock, andthe best player houses found within city wallswill necessitate a good stat as well.

Infamy, Explained

Infamyis your public mark of villainy, so to speak. You can gain it bycompleting Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests, as well askilling guards and peaceful NPCs,achieving high bounties, and being sent to jail.

Nicely enough, high Infamy can also be useful for conversations with certain NPCs. There’s ahidden value called Responsibilityin Oblivion, andcharacters with low Responsibility stats will actually be more predisposed toward youif you have higher Infamy.

Remarkably, if your Infamy is very high,Bandits won’t attack you. Since Bandits are consistently common foes in many of Oblivion Remastered’s dungeons, the perks here are substantial. Mind you, we’re talkingveryhigh - we’ve not tested it ourselves yet, but research suggestsover 600.

Lowering Infamy

On the other hand, when you’re gainingCrusader gearthrough theKnights of the Nineexpansion questline - which is available by default in Oblivion Remastered -having Infamy any higher than 1 will prevent you from wearing any of it.

This is pretty great armor, so if you’re planning on being a pretty nice person in Cyrodiil, keep this in mind. If you do get an Infamy score of higher than 1 (which is quite easy to have happen), and you still want the armor to work as intended, visit one wayshrine for each of the Nine Divines.

Upon doing so,your Infamy will revert to zero. This won’t be an option until you gain thePilgrimagequest, via the Knights of the Nine questline, mind you.

But gaining this quest is, thankfully, quite easy! Listen in on enough NPC conversations in any settlement, and you’ll hear abouta prophet in Bravil causing a stir. Go there, speak with the stir-causer, and you’ll gain the Pilgrimage quest. Easy-peasy.
