Summary

One of the core tenets ofDoomis that every weapon matters, from the pistol to the BFG 9000. It’s a design philosophy that, despite the advent of looter shooters, id Software stayed firm on. Your arsenal throughout Doom (2016) andEternalis carefully curated, with every weapon serving an individual and distinct purpose — even your fists have value.

Doom co-creator John Romero would"rather spend more time with a gun and make sure the gun’s design is really deep"than play with “a million things you don’t identify with”.

The Ravager Gun in The Sentinel Command Station of Doom The Dark Ages.

But that doesn’t stop fans deliberating over what guns are “useless”, as we’re seeing withThe Dark Ages. “Accelerator is just not great,“u/LowBrown posted to over 2,000 upvotes. “It’s weak, its recoil is too hard to use besides close ranges and one shot with this equals one shot with Cycler, that has much more power in it.”

Not everyone agrees, with some arguing that “the high rate of fire has been a godsend”, and that it “fu**ing melts the enemies”. u/MrSteeze3 went as far as to say that it’s “the best for single target DPS”. Regardless of where you land on Accelerator-gate, the post has sparked a wider conversation about just what exactly the worst gun in the game is.

Grenade Launcher, Pulverizer, Accelerator: What Is The Dark Ages' Worst Gun?

Sifting through the mountain of ‘you’re wrong’ comments about the Accelerator, there are a bunch of alternatives put forward by other players. “I would say grenade launcher, only used it a few times,” u/willow_duffy suggested, echoing what other commenters like u/Tony_McBones put forward. But, of course, it was rebutted: “Wow you don’t use it right then,” u/BigBlackCrocs said. “That’s like the second best gun in the game. Melts quicker than most weapons”.

The plasma weapons aren’t bad, they’re just redundant.

Another popular pick is the Shredder; “No reason to use it over the Impaler,” u/HickoryHamMike0 argued. “It lacks in utility and there [are] four other automatic weapons that do way better than it”. u/damnation78_ had similar reasoning, “Once you get the Pulverizer and Ravager, it feels like there’s no point in even using it. Ravager just feels better for single target DPS and Pulverizer is amazing for dealing with large hordes.”

Then again, others aren’t too fussed about the Pulverizer, with u/laflame0451 saying that itandthe Shredder are the “worst” guns in the game. “There’s rarely hordes that the Pulverizer is any good for,” u/RipMcStudly said. u/TheKekeriko took that note further, arguing that while it (and the Shredder) is good for crowds, “so is a single shield throw”.

It all comes down to personal taste, and whatever upgrades you have equipped, but some players, like u/bigwheel42, think that Doom: The Dark Ages has honored the series' core tenet. “Every weapon is good in their own way. None of them are really useless,” they wrote. “I agree,” u/BenGrimmsStoneSack added. “Any time I thought a weapon sucked, it turned out I was just using it wrong.”
