Clair Obscur: Expedition 33uses a magic system of chroma, themed around painting and colors. The stars don’t enter into it, perhaps outside of Sciel’s foretelling combat style, but that’s no reason that we can’t have a bit of fun figuring out the zodiac signs that best fit each character.
In the game’s world of burning hope and passionate perseverance, the best and worst traits of each zodiac sign are on full display. These characters may lean toward one zodiac sign or another, but they’re all determined to make their own fate. Where does your sign land on our list?

12Aries - Noco
March 21 - April 19
Aries lives in a world of superlatives, and the feisty, striving Gestral Noco is a perfect fit for this fiery sign. Noco has already made a name for himself as thebest Searcher who ever lived, and now he’s gotten bored of that and wants to be thebest merchant everby way of being thebest treasure hunter ever.
Just like Noco, Aries moves from one thing to the next, always pushing themselves forward and encouraging others to follow their example. It might be hard to imagine, but Noco was actually Monoco’s mentor in a previous incarnation!
11Taurus - Emma
April 20 - May 20
Gustave’s sister Emma is the Chief Councilwoman of Lumiere - the de facto leader of the remaining survivors. She’sstoic, brave, and steadfast, keeping morale up at home while Expedition 33 travels to the Continent to battle the Paintress.
A true Taurus, Emma isprotective of those around herand is an inspiring leader. She doesn’t like sending Expeditioners to their deaths, and privately believes that theGommagecan’t be stopped, but for the sake of the public she publicly supports Gustave and Expedition 33, making her own sacrifice for the greater good.
10Gemini - Sciel
May 21 - June 20
It’s not just Sciel’s duality-themed fighting style that makes her a fit for Gemini. She’samiable and affectionate, and able to lighten the mood in even the tensest situations. She knows precisely whether the conversation calls for a joke, a reassuring hand on the shoulder, or even a flirty one-liner.
Like Gemini, Sciel is open-minded and adaptable, butdoesn’t do well with being alone. When she thought she was the only survivor of Expedition 33, she considered living out her final year among the Gestrals rather than trying to finish the mission solo.
9Cancer - Esquie
June 21 - July 22
Esquie is everybody’s friend, always ready to see the positives no matter how grim things get. Just like Cancer, heintuitively understands others on a deep level, even if he can’t always articulate his knowledge in a way that makes sense to humans.
That’s not to say that Esquie (or Cancer) is sunshine and rainbows all the time. Hegets moody fastwhen he feels like he’s being left out, and he’s willing to say what’s on his mind no matter what. The thing is, though, that he’s so lovable that he can usually get away with it.
8Leo - Renoir
July 23 - August 22
Renoir is Leo on a bad day, and when a lion has a bad day it becomes everybody’s problem. Clair Obscur’s imposing antagonist isunflinchingly proudand believes he knows what’s best for everyone. He’s willing to make sacrifices for those he cares about, but he demands that his efforts be acknowledged and appreciated.
Occasionally, Renoir’s better aspects shine through; he doescare very deeply about his family, and it’s clear he’d go to any lengths to see them thrive, but hisunwillingness to see any path but his ownultimately proves to be his biggest weakness.
7Virgo - Lune
August 23 - September 22
Lune is a classic Virgo.Diligent and hard-working to a fault, her calm, analytical approach saves the Expedition countless times when a steady hand is needed. She’s spent her entire life preparing for her journey to the Continent, so she’s driven by a sense of purpose that few can match.
She’s not a stick-in-the-mud, though; Luneloves finding time to play her guitar. There’s a time and a place for everything, though, and Lune puts her personal desires aside whenever the mission calls for it… which is most of the time.
6Libra - Verso
September 23 - October 22
Verso is an extremely complex character, and he’s made all the harder to figure out by the fact that hekeeps a lot of secrets. Libra will do what it takes to avoid confrontations and maintain the cohesion of the group, but Verso takes that idea to the extreme.
By his own admission, Verso isafraid that the rest of the Expedition will abandon himif he tells them the full extent of what he knows. No matter how many times this indecisiveness comes back to bite him, he never seems to learn his lesson. As much asLibra doesn’t like to feel vulnerable, there are probably a lot of problems that could have been avoided if Verso had taken a leap of faith.
Verso Prime’s birthday is established as February 22, making him a Pisces, but it’s not established whether the Expedition’s Verso has the same birthday.
5Scorpio - Monoco
October 23 - November 21)
Scorpio can be tough to get along with, but once you find a connection it’shard to find a more steadfast friend. Likewise, Monoco isfiercely loyaldespite his constant ribbing, and heexpresses his affection through teasing and arguing.
Monoco always knows when Verso’s up to something - not because he has some kind of sixth sense or intuition, but because they’ve been together through thick and thin and he knows his best friend better than Verso knows himself.
4Sagittarius - Maelle
November 22 - December 21
If there’s any sign thatcan’t stand being tied down, it’s Sagittarius, and Maelle fits that description right from the beginning. She volunteers for Expedition 33 - all but guaranteed to be a one-way trip - after growing tired of life in Lumiere.
Maelle also joins the Expedition to stay at Gustave’s side rather than lose another family. Sagittariusforms deep connections to people, and a journey into the unknown alongside those closest to them is just about the most Sagittarius thing imaginable.
3Capricorn - Gustave
December 22 - January 19
Smart, kind-hearted, and acapable teacher and leader, Gustave has many of Capricorn’s best traits. We don’t get to see him at work, but we also know that he’s a meticulous and talented engineer, showing Capricorn’s natural talent forlogic and problem-solving.
However, Capricornisn’t known for their optimism or adaptability. After reuniting with Lune, Gustave expresses his belief that the two of them can’t possibly complete the mission on their own, and she has to remind him that no matter what, “when one falls, we continue.”
