One of the best parts ofOblivion Remasteredis the freedom to choose how your adventure unfolds from the moment you exit the tutorial section. Once you open that sewer grate, you can choose to immediately make your way to Weynon Priory and meet Jauffre, or you can ignore the main quest entirely to blaze your trail.
While you should venture out into the world and enjoy every nook, side quest, and treasure that Oblivion Remastered has to offer, you should visit a few cities first to get started. The game leaves you a few feet away from the Imperial City for a reason, so while you’re able to mix things up, here’s the best order to visit cities in Oblivion Remastered.
1Imperial City
The first place to make inroads is The Imperial City, which is directly behind you once you leave the Imperial City Sewers, a convenient location that is a heavy-handed hint to check out the area. The Imperial City is the central hub of Cyrodiil, offering a handful of districts to suit your needs.
The people here (and around Cyrodiil) willreact to you differently based on which raceyou choose.
Visit the Market Districtearly and often to offload heavy loot and refill your coin purse while clearing out space for more treasures. Furthermore, you canparticipate in the Imperial City Arena,which is an excellent way to make money to buy better gear.
2Chorrol
While it’s slightly out of the way due to its northwestern position on the map, Chorrol is an excellent stop to make if you want to get your bearings a bit more before diving headfirst into the main quest. It’s also a great time tojoin the Fighter’s Guild,or continue seeking out recommendations if you havebegun your Mage’s Guild journeyin the Imperial City.
You can alsostock up on spells and potionshere with the money you earned from the Arena, giving you a little extra wiggle room for the string of battles you’re about to face.
3Kvatch
Once you’ve finished exploring the Imperial City and continuing your guild journeys in Chorrol, you can continue following the main story quest to Kvatch, where you’ll find an Oblivion gate you need to close, along with several people trapped inside the church nearby.
This section gives you a great chance to continue improving your combat skills and put any of your Arena training into practice.The Siege of Kvatch is relatively short,and you’ll continue on your tour of Cyrodiil soon after, once you find Martin and get him to follow you.
4Bruma
Bruma is the immediate natural progression once you’ve finished the Kvatch quest, as you’ll join Jauffre and Martin along the main quest. This is also one of the most convenient spots where you’ll be able to advance your standing in the Thieves' Guild by selling stolen goods to the fence here,Ongar, the World-Weary.
If you want totest your lockpicking skills,you can seek out J’Ghasta’s House across from the chapel, as he has aBlack Hand Hood and Black Hand Robelocked behind aVery Hard lockin the lower room. This armor raises your Sneak, Marksman, Illusion, Blade, and Speechcraft.
5Anvil
Once you’re done following the story and exploring everything Bruma has to offer, it feels natural to finish exploring the western side of the map by heading to Anvil. While it might be wise to wait until later to start the Knights of the Nine DLC, Anvil is also home to the Prophet, who triggers that questline.
Furthermore, there are a few quests worth doing here, most notably’The Ghost Ship of Anvil,‘which gives you a chance to collectEctoplasmfrom ghosts. You’ll need thisEctoplasmdown the road as part of the Fighter’s Guild quest,so if you don’t do anything else in Anvil, do that side quest.
6Bravil
From one waterfront city to another, we shift from Anvil to Bravil – a very busy waterfront city, as it features Dark Brotherhood, Mages Guild, and Thieves Guild quests to follow. The Thieves’ Guild holds the lion’s share of the quests, with four to complete.
If you enjoyed Anvil’s ghost ship quest, then you can look forward to The Forlorn Watchman side quest, which tasks you with laying a former sailor to rest.
7Cheydinhal
Cheydinhal is another extremely lively city, thanks largely to the presence of the Fighters, Mages, and Thieves Guilds here. Furthermore, there are several unique side quests to enjoy here, including one of the best in Oblivion: ‘A Brush with Death.’
Whether you want to enter strange paintings or expose corruption in the cityguard, Cheydinhal is packed with fun diversions and offers enough guild quests to keep you busy as you continue advancing. You’ll also need to stop here as part of the Knights of the Nine DLC, so it’s a necessary stop if you began that in Anvil.
8Skingrad
Skingrad has a bit of an endgame feeling to it, partially due to the presence of one of the longest quests in Oblivion Remastered: ‘Seeking Your Roots.’ During this quest, you’ll chaseNirnrootsamples all over Cyrodiil, as these rare plants only grow near bodies of water.
You don’t need to be here for any guilds, save for your Mages Guild Skingrad Recommendation, so the main appeals are the side quests, none of which are particularly pressing. Feel free to leave Skingrad until last if you prefer, but it would be a boring last stop.
9Leyawin
Leyawin is one of the best cities to visit last in Oblivion Remastered, thanks to its plethora of side quests you can enjoy here, particularly the nearby Daedric quests.
There are only a couple of quests here for the Mages Guild and Thieves Guild, so most of the action is in the side quests.
Drug raids, murderous reception, disorderly contact, and a meeting with Sanguine are all on the menu in Leyawin. If you want to save the darkest, seediest, most absurd side quests for later, then Leyawin is an excellent city to visit last in Oblivion Remastered.
